Just out of curiosity, what syllabus are they going to use? and what qualifications will be awarded upon completion? Hopefully not a ZA Matric or "outcomes based education"

Standard SA Matric. I believe that they will be striving for maximum distinctions.

Maybe you can state YOUR reasons for the displeasure!! Please don't say she could have spread her money wider because that has been shown to be less than ideal in the SA context due to corruption and mismanagement. Also how far and wide have you spread your own money???
I've given my reasons already, just go look back at the thread.

But hey, don't let that stop you from assuming that I'm a racist, an elitist and a sexist all at the same time.

I don't think any one talk show host has ever given every single audience member a house during one of their shows. Oh wait - Oprah has. She's also given cars, holidays, the list goes on

Maybe you haven't seen that news article that detailed how much that house / car cost the receiver - the gift that keeps on taking. Too bad that I can't provide you with a link but basically what the article said was that the audience members had to pay some kind of tax on the cars they received from Oprah and it was quite a bit of cash, mind you.

NOTE: Cars, cellphones, decoders etc, don't make good gifts. Need I even explain ?

Oh come on...

Yes, I wouldn't give a cellphone/decoder etc as a gift - but enough of the looking a gift horse in the mouth. Are the taxes going to Oprah? Did she levy them? If the tax is too onerous is there something preventing these people from selling the cars, that they got for nothing?

Apparently Oprah is a Zulu girl. She's romoured to be on another mission to build another school in KZN. This time it's for both boys and girls. Well done '0'

fact- when oprah gave the audience members the cars, she made it very clear that tax had to be paid on these cars, and that it would be illegal for oprah herself to pay the tax. the audience members were given the oportunity to reject the gift of the car, or keep the car and pay the tax.

no one rejected the car.

yup chiskop, there really is no pleasing some people. a quarter of a billion rand of personal funds, not to mention time and efforts, towards educating potential new leaders .... how evil.

it greatly saddens me that it takes a foreigner to show us the potential we have here in SA. on cnn oprah was asked why did she not put the money into inner city american schools. she replied that the kids there only want ipods and sneakers, but the kids here want an education and an opportunity.

I don't believe that.

Firstly, I wouldn't go grandstanding about giving ppl cars that they had to pay for.

Secondly, Oprah's whole business of giving, is more to attract attention to herself than to help others; that's just human nature - we don't do things for others unless we can benefit ourselves.

Just so you understand:
They didn't have to pay for the cars - just the taxes.

What next, you going to complain that she didn't provide them with free petrol for life?

Its simple product placement. I remember reading somewhere she was actually paid to give away those cars by the company, best publicity you can buy. I don't have a link though.

Sorry, I wasn't question whether she said it or not, I was questioning whether it was true.

It is product placement, but she was not paid for it(she's a billionaire)
They threw the idea at Oprah(show) and they/she agreed
AFAIK

Hehe, have you've been reading something like 'Heat' or another such tabloid?

No I never stoop that low. :D It was on a site linked from Digg I think, can't remember exactly.

Edit: Was from the Boston Globe:

In September 2004, GM paid Oprah Winfrey an estimated $8 million to give all 276 souls in her studio audience a new G6. For several raving minutes, Oprah endorsed the product. You can imagine the high-fives among GM executives.

Slightly more credible than Heat. :D
