Do you honestly think the world's richest black woman who has her face blasted to more television sets in the world than any other black woman, ever would honestly need the publicity? Seriously, Oprah is probably better known than Nelson Mandela. I doubt she needs the publicity.

One last thing, she bankrolled the entire project - out of her own will and pocket. She could've launched a Perfume and made millions based on her name alone, but she chose to spend money instead. That was noble of her. Enough with looking a gift horse in the mouth. Ingrates.
 
Launching a perfume line doesn't get you a rep for being a humanitarian. This is simply brand control, and you, JontyB have fallen for it hook line and sinker.

So what if she's doing it for her own brand? Honestly, it is money that otherwise would never have been spent. Just be grateful, and if you don't like it, don't worry, you don't have to send your kids to her school. Why don't you guys take on Bill and Melinda Gates for spending their money in the same vein - on projects they pick and choose at their will? Is it because Oprah is black? Is that the problem? Or is it because she has more money than any of you will probably see in an entire lifetime? She made it. Good for her. Now she quite possibly will ensure a couple of girls from little insignificant and completely meaningless South Africa make it too. Good for them. FFS. really, pick on Mugabe or someone who is actually evil.

Seriously though, I have no less a degree of contempt for Bill Gates' actions. But at least, as far as I can tell, the money is spent more in a 'help as many as we can' kind of way. That still doesn't excuse the fact that most of the money came by selling an operating system that was below par and became popular solely because of superior marketing.

Again, it's another case of the money being tainted by the source.
 
If I had to do what Oprah has done to get her money in order to do it, then I'd rather do nothing at all.

Actually you're the one who doesnt like this topic and posting "Oprah is branding the planet" with dogged singlemindedness.

Most schools try to brand themselves anyway, school uniforms and badges and mottos' and such.

It doesn't matter what it could have been used for. It easier to use money for research, because then you can spend the money on virtually anything, in the name of said research. If you say you're going to uplift people or build buildings, you actually have to show something for it. But maybe I'm just overly pessimistic by nature.

Well, I think spending 40 million on building a state of the art school (which is now a first in SA) which will stand for many years and school thousands of kids over time is a better start than throwing money at research.

Anyway, I'm probably committing career suicide, considering I work as a researcher :D

Sure she doesn't need the publicity, but she can always boost her image and cultivate it, she certainly knows what she's doing or she wouldn't be in her current position. Maybe I'm just being overly cynical. You mentioned Bill & Melinda Gates in another post, personally their efforts seem more genuine to me because its more unobtrusive, less press conferences and branding etc.

Whatever her motivation though its only a good thing for the people that end up studying there and I suppose at the end of the day thats what matters.
 
How about this: All you guys that are against Oprah trying to make a difference int his country, why don't you all pool some money together and try and do what you guys think Oprah should do and show her what was the better choice?

And now ppl are blaming Bill Gates for making lots of money from MS Windows and at the end will donate almost 90% of his wealth to his foundation for humanitarian work. In 2004 he donated 100% of his earnings from MS (around $3Bn to his foundation) and now he's up to the **** for doing so. Looks like we should call for an end to all the tycoons who donate money to charities now. It's funny how no one really slams those oil tycoons in the middle east who spend time converting cars to boats because they have too much money and admitted themselves that they don't know what to do with the money.
 
@derekc: yeah, I think the rich should say "**** you" to the poor and live the good life with the knowledge that the poor are nothing more than ingrates anyway.
