Oprahs new school??????

I can only speculate of the real reason for such displeasure about Oprah's donation. It must be the fact that the school admits poor black girls. You must be a real skeptik to question Oprah's motives on this one. The question is what are you willing to do to alleviate poverty? Or maybe you like to have girls growing up under poverty stricken environments that are riddled with abuse and disease!

Or maybe you should just take the reasons given at face value and stop trolling.

. What makes you think that I'm trolling??? Or is anyone posting a diparate view to yours a troll???

In your last post you claim that everyone who doesn't think this is a good thing is a closet racist.

How the **** is that NOT trolling?

It's funny that you picked up on only the racist claim!!! In the same post I claimed that everyone who does not think that this is a good idea is a closet sexist or a closet elitist.

Oh by all means, I apologise for only pointing out ONE of the THREE ad-hominems you commited.

Anal retentive was not an insult, but more a musing. Doesn't really matter, considering your pathetic retort though does it? *******.
More insults. Keep your "musings" to yourself please.

Actually you're the one who doesnt like this topic and posting "Oprah is branding the planet" with dogged singlemindedness.

Most schools try to brand themselves anyway, school uniforms and badges and mottos' and such.
Misquote. I said she was "branding the girls". i.e. Putting her magazine logo on their uniforms. School badges are historical and traditional - latin mottos etc. Hardly the same.

There's quite a difference between pulling them out of poverty and putting them in 5 star surroundings in a third world country with the aid of the provincial government by the way!

Here are some more quotes from Her Majesty Oprah:...

"My biggest struggle here ... was getting other people in this country to understand my vision," Oprah told the network. "For a long, long time it was cumbersome and difficult. And I gave up about three years ago."

But she changed her mind after officials were going to name it after her anyway and "I had to have some control over what's going to happen", she said.

"I think there's some residual apartheid effect here," she said, adding that many "people didn't people that African girls should have such beautiful surroundings" at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls at Henley-on-Klip, south of Johannesburg.

"Everybody is calling it lavish. I call it comfortable," she said. "Why would I build tin shacks for girls who come from tin shacks?"

Oprah said she is prepared to take care of all the costs of running the school in addition to the $40-million it took to plan and build it. She hopes her example will be an inspiration for others.
Mail & Guardian

On "Entertainment Today" a nightly TV program in the U.S they took us to South Africa to show us Opra Winfrey cutting the ribbon to open "HER" new school for South African girls.

Mandela, Sydney Poiteur and other famous American black entertainers were also around to enjoy the merriments.

When asked "Why are there only black children at your school"

Oprah replied "I don't need to appease myself to the white people of this country".

A stunned silence immediately overwhelmed the crowd of people in the room in which I was sitting.

Maybe you can state YOUR reasons for the displeasure!! Please don't say she could have spread her money wider because that has been shown to be less than ideal in the SA context due to corruption and mismanagement. Also how far and wide have you spread your own money???

Well said O, your benevolence has aroused a lot of racist criticism but don't worry the real people who should be greatful ARE!

Who wouldn't be greatful after being given a place at the most elite & expensive school in the country?
I reckon she should have sponsored places at established schools around the country. Aah but then she wouldn't get the O brand on their blazes and all the publicity.
(Where are the racist criticisms Angelo?)

Oh shame Skeptic. You insulted me on a personal level so whatever man. Not my problem you're an *******.

I haven't read this thread through and I haven't followed any of the news coverage on this so I am unaware of all the facts. I have read that the school is for previously disadvantaged girls, which is fine. The problem is that what does "previously disadvantaged" mean? It normally means blacks only in this government, but I would hope that this school doesn't base its selection criteria on race. So that would be my only concern about the school.

As for if she did it for publicity, who cares if it makes a positive difference to some peoples lives? Could the money have been spent more effectively? Yeah it probably could have, but it also could have been spent alot worse.

{Warning to Angelo - a racially based comment follows - so don't look for fear of being offended}

I read somewhere (forget where), the criterion was originally 'black only', but now it has been changed to 'economic circumstances'.

Racial selection is not new to Oprah and her company. She hosted a forum in America some time back, and was criticised for inviting "black women only".

IThe problem is that what does "previously disadvantaged" mean? It normally means blacks only in this government,
No, PDA normally means blacks (Coloureds, Indians and Africans), women, disabled people, and people from rural areas. It's up to an individual to assume the narrower view of PDA.

Africans? That's still my favourite load of crap that comes out of people's mouths.

Personally I think discrimination is wrong to matter what, but there are many many people who thing discrimination is only wrong when they're on the wrong end of it.
