OS X Overrated

Ok, not wanna judge anyone, and how they feel about their OS? but this is a bit of stupid view? aint it?

You think if [by some magic intervention] Mac OS becomes the most used OS in the world, there will still be no virusses for it?

Linux - "but they first have to customize their kernel/distro" ??? explain, i started using ubuntu 9.04 at home, what do you define as customise? i installed, downloaded software needed [through package management] and there... done? movies/music/foto's/office/email... all done, without ever "re-compiling" or what ever your version of "customizing their kernel" means?

And your argument here with the viruses: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12537279/

and

http://www.viruslist.com/en/analysis?pubid=191968025

so maybe you should stop trying to "prove" how awesome mac os is, since the more people that will use it, the more viruses there will be for mac's :p

Thanks for an enlightened argument. Yes both Linux and Max OSX are fairly safe from viruses as it stands, but both stand a high chance, in future, of becoming victims.

As for kernel customisation: even if a kernel update occurs in 9.04 it will be done by the update manager and will no longer even have to reboot the machine! It really is a non-event.

Going back to page 1, this is the type of stuff that gets you fragged around these parts. So let's kiss make up and start over...

Yes, because it is that frustrating. I can't even sit in front the Mac for longer than 15 minutes anymore because I need to walk around and clear my head. It honestly makes me feel like that and there are times I want to throw the whole machine out the window.

I also have problems with OSX not that I use it but one of my staff members have one. One day spent 2 hours trying to get a network printer to work no matter what I did I couldn't get it to work. In the end restarting the OS suddenly made the network card work again so I could get the printer working. Talk about stability in the OS.

Also I have not found a way yet to connect remotely to our exchange server even after endless googling.

The windows part was true
The linux part was tongue in cheek
The mac part was true

So much more motivation to finish your task asap. I hope that you are a consultant and can move on to your next customer.

I get the feeling that a Mac is only good for certain things and what I am attempting to do can be quite frustrating in OSX.

Oh dude! That is such a Mac owners response! I so need to forward this to my friends, they'll get a laugh out of it!

EDIT: if you can't take the time to even try to defend or explain your OS choice don't expect people to flock to it. That attitude is why Windows will always trump OS X, unfortunately.

The problem is that it seems your assumption is that the lack of a maximize feature similar to windows is a critical fault of OS X. What you have to keep in mind is that just because it forms a crucial part of your workflow doesn't mean that is the same for everyone else.

Personally I have no use for maximize so have never missed it or even thought about it.

I have a very difficult time keeping track of my windows, especially when I'm trying to view several different folders in the file manager at one time. I keep "losing" windows. The fact that several smaller convenient functions I take for granted in Windows or Linux don't exist in Mac OS X only fuels my frustration.

What functions are you missing for window management?

Personally I find using spaces and expose much more convenient for how I work.

I wrote the piece of software in a week for Windows, and the Windows clients are all happy. It has taken me over 6 months to get it working on the Mac. For some reason the Adobe suite scripting runs so much slower on OS X no matter the machine I use. Then there was the additional problem with the JRE on 10.3 and 10.4 which doesn't play nicely with other children, yet only Apple is allowed to release their proprietary versions. It has been the biggest ball ache. Fortunately I've got the scripting and application working on both OSs with minimum fuss, so I now do all my work on the PC and merely test on the Mac.

Wow, you really shouldn't have this many issues with OSX. Sounds to me like you have damaged machine.

But to be honest, my first week with a mac was a bit frustrating as I couldn't find how to do the things I was used to doing in windows. what helped for me was to stop thinking in windows mode. EVERYTHING in Mac OSX is way more obvious and intuitive, than windows. As soon as you start thinking "mac" it changes... give it some time, you'll have your switch moment... everyone does.

Used OSX before and I must say I don't see what all the fanfare is about. Definately not my cup of tea.

No, I didn't claim that. It is, however, an example of a few small functions that I take for granted that don't exist in OSX - and this frustrates me to the point that I can't handle working with the Mac. I honestly get very annoyed using the OS especially considering I come from a Unix background :(

I sometimes even get to the point where I abandon the GUI and use the terminal.

If you've ever used Beryl then you really know what you're missing out on :)

And hell, if you've ever used

Not sure why anyone has to "defend" their OS.

Anyway on the Apple site, there are plenty of tutorials, videos etc that will show you how to do things.
There's also many addons that you can use to suite your needs, just do a bit of googling.

Can't believe you can't figure out how the mouse works.:D
Relax and go through system preferences, the help files etc.
It's really simple to use a mac.

Unfortunately I don't refer to only one Mac, though I must admit the one I have is the most frustrating - but that's a software issue, I imagine.

But as I keep saying its probably not suited to what I am attempting to do. For all you high-graphic users it works out much better, I'm sure.

Which is why I suggested sticking to a system that matches your workflow. No one tool is perfect for every person in every situation.

I have used beryl and didn't find it added anything over spaces/expose. It is possible that I missed something though - suggestions?

No alf, the point was they obviously came into an "OS X Overrated" thread to defend their choice in OS and then claim the aren't here to do so. So you're right, no has to "defend" their OS but then they're in the wrong place, innit?

I know how the silly little mouse works, I just claimed you can't right-click - which you can't. I don't like using it that way, and that does seem to be the general opinion yet Apple continues to insist :/

And no, it isn't the mouse. I've been working with the machine for the entire year and it honestly drives me barmy. I would rather do everything remotely via a terminal than log on.

Thank you, that's an honest opinion. Unfortunately in this instance I had little choice. However, this experience has done little to endear me to a Mac.

Once you get into beryl you'll be flying through all those windows. Again, its probably a case of getting used to a different way of doing things. But your personal choice, so thats fine.

Hehe, sorry the last two sentences were the same thing :p Got distracted.

Yeah, we all like to bash other people's stuff.

I've also been frustrated with my mac many times.
I sukkeled to figure out how to do things, and then after a trip to "Help" or google, I find there's some simple way to do it that I'd never figure out myself.

Btw, you can right click on the mighty mouse, there's no partition between the buttons, which confuses people. There are also side buttons on it.
The ball can also be used as a button.
(The mouse is of a crappy build quality though, I don't particularly like it.)

Wow...I really didn't think this thread would grow so quickly!
What I mean by maximizing firefox is what you can do in windows with f11. The whole screen is filled with the browser.

Oh yea and I forgot to mention that "expose" is pretty awesome too.

I didnt mean to bash OS X...I was just saying that people pretend like its the best piece of software since Commander Keen when in fact its just average. I really hope SL can make it super stable, add some nice features and use my 8gb of ram well.

I dont know wtf people are saying about no right-click because I'm using logitech mx5500 with the laptop and its working perfectly (without the BT dongle).

*Mighty mouse is a giant piece of human ****

Mac bashing is about the only time we see action in the Mac section.
Aren't too many issues with OSX.
