thread will most likely be "moved"

Not the first year (one year warranty is legal requirement) but if there is an extended warranty i.e. to 24 months then they normally withdraw the warranty for the extended period if you don't use the SIM card of the network that provided the phone.

ok, so i didnt take extended warranty. so then i cant lose my warranty?

Well if you bought a Vodacom phone (if not CellC or VM) as you say you want to use an MTN card there is no requirement to use a Vodacom SIM for the first year because they cannot encroach on your statutory rights.

I would also suggest that you take the P990i to a Vodacare centre and ask them to flash the phone with 'stock' SonyEriccson firmware, to get rid of the Vodafone software on the phone....

After that, your P990i should work as well as mine... :)

*Oops, sorry for posting on a Vodacom thread...

nah, i knew about it :) just pushing the limits

i knew i would get more hits on the regular voda forum side, and i did :)

yeah its true... it's a new thing Service Providers are doing to force ppl to stay on their networks.

According to the sales person I spoke to today, you loose your entire warranty if you use an MTN phone on the Vodacom network or a Vodacom phone on the MTN network... this was at Edgars, I was looking at purchasing a V3i which is unfortunately only available on MTN.

Aside from the warranty if you take insurance from the service provider then swapping sims runs the risk of voiding the insurance as well. I had a friend who had a claim repudiated because he had used another networks sim in the phone.
I think it was because the phone had dropped off the SPs radar and they couldn't track it and felt it had been lost earlier than the person alleged but who knows how insurance works.

if its not in my contract they have absalutely jack to stand on BRING IT ON VODACOM

@ kvi, Carlhead, pope24,

Can you please PM me the details of whom made these statements to you?

I tend to agree with at least the first year (manufacturer) warranty not being bound by any SIM issue.

And they determine this how exactly? I swop sims all the time, how will any provider know i am using another sim in my phone? Do they check your IMEI across all the networks or something, or are you only to make sure you don't "Accidentally" leave the wrong sim in your phone when you take it in?

they claimed that every call that is made on every network is logged with imei number, so during a warranty claim they can see exactly what card and calls were made on the phone....... i actually felt a bit sorry for them, they seemed a little technologically challenged if you know what i mean.

they also said that if i used my mtn card in my "voda" p990 it would break the phone, coz that phone is very finicky you know :)

There would probably be a record on the actual phone itself - I know that Nokia phones have a security setting that keeps a record of sim cards that the person with the security code [usually the user] has authorised for use in the phone - which obviously means that the phone itself keeps a record.

Well, catch is, your phone probably need to be in working condition for all that to be determined , this includes the phone actually being in your possession [as opposed to being stolen] . ...

And for some reason i can't imagine a shop "quickly" logging onto some global database checking what simcards i used on my IMEI [everytime i bring in the phone to fix] ? This obviously includes simcards from overseas ? [i.e. i used Orange when i was in Europe] .

Exactly, it is highly unlikely that anyone at a service centre or whatever, would actually expend that much effort, but if pushed to start looking for reasons not to uphold the warranty, well who knows...

Something worth noting, is that this "thou shalt not use a competing network's sim card in thy cell phone" seems to apply equally to both Vodacom as well as MTN, anyone know what the CellC outlets say?
