Performance showdown: OSX Snow Leopard beats Windows 7

I wish they'd rather focus on stability instead of performance. I'd rather have a slower, stable machine than a fast, unstable one. As for ease of use, well that's completely subjective.

Correct. So stay with XP and Leopard for now on, until Win 7 SP1 and more SL updates.

Of course, what I meant with the least amount of money takes all factors into account (initial acquisition costs, maintenance costs, update costs, recovery costs, etc).

EDIT: The amount of time I spend monthly restoring crashed Windows machines... At least it's a regular source of income :D Strangely enough mine doesn't give me any issues.

You're correct but some Windows fanboys on MyBB don't understand your point. They just say OMG!!!!!ponies!!!!1 look Windows PC from Acer costs R3000 less!!!!!1 and they forget the rest. :)

Currently running Windows 7 RC1 x64 on 3 machines, haven't had any problems. In fact, it's faster than Windows XP was on them.

But Windows XP is still installed on most of my low-spec systems. If it ain't broke...

Pfffft, fanbois  I think I was absent the day fanboism was handed out :D

Techie are you saying windows 7 is not stable?

It is the most stable windows i have ever used. Windows 7 does not a sp1, vista layed the foundation for the best windows OS ever released.

Like i said though, use what works for you be it windows, linux or mac. Also i run no anti virus and i must say i never have to reload my pc like used to all the time with xp.

No I am not. In fact if you look closely you'll see that I've had no stability problems with it (yet).

However, it is inevitable that, eventually, all operating systems will crash (whether it's due to a badly-designed kernel, deadlock, 3rd party applications, etc). I'd like to see a test on the frequency at which that occurs between different operating systems.

Windows 7 vs Snow Leopard on a MacBookPro

Both operating systems were tested on a 2008 MacBook Pro machine by CNet, and each was given its own, separate, clean hard drive. The 64-bit version of each OS was included in the test, which measured a variety of speed and performance related tasks. Snow Leopard was given true, full 64-bit support with most of its native applications taking full advantage of modern processors.

Each OS had the same software installed: iTunes 9, QuickTime, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and Cinebench R10. In the test, Snow Leopard booted and shut down significantly faster than Windows 7.

"In time-based tests, Snow Leopard consistently outdid Windows 7," the study found. "It took only 36.4 seconds to boot up, while Windows took 42.7 seconds. In a shutdown test, Snow Leopard took only 6.6 seconds, while Windows needed twice the amount of time: 12.6 seconds. Both computers, however, took just about 1 second to return from sleeping. For this reason, I didn't actually test the wake-up time as it was too short in both operating systems to produce meaningful numbers or even allow me to measure the difference."

Very interesting test, can't wait for more comparisons.

I just found this an interesting article. Loads of people seem to be running Win XP on bootcamp, just thought this might be useful for the guys that buy macbooks and run windows on it. Also just trying to highlight the point that if the software has been optimized with the hardware in mind, you get some awesome performances. Would love to see win7 running on a machine with the same spec as that macbook, and see the results.

Killadoob, i didn't expect any different, but i am also expecting win7 to not perform much better on a similar spec'd notebook. Maybe only on battery life.

Also, some of these replies are quite uncalled for, just posted an interesting article.

I posted that article earlier in the thread. OS X Snow Leopard is faster on my Dell than Windows as well. Even Leopard is faster than Windows 7

Thanks to mod for merging, i didn't see this thread. My bad...

How about we get hackintosh to go against windows 7 and see the results?

Hmmm might not be fair.

Why do these 2 os's need to be tested? they are both rocked solid and i cannot think of a fair way to put them against each other.

- two systems, same/similar components.
- run software benchmarks that work on BOTH systems, eg: corel draw, photoshop, maya, etc, etc.

I will try perform these tests. All I can say is my friend's Q6600 @ 3ghz is awesome under Snow Leopard. A Core i7 Hackintosh @ 4ghz would be awesome!

Ok ok, we have gone from windows bashing and mac bashing to PeterCH bashing. Now i dont always agree with his one sided opinion (yes i am on the same side as that opinion) but PeterCH does make some valid points.

Now back to the topic, we are trying to determine if windows7 is quicker than Snow Leopard. Synaesthesia has been kind enough to offer to run some tests for us, and has even given us some of his conclusions on performance on his Dell. What i seen now is windows7 is slower on a Macbook (this is expected) but is also slower on Synaesthesia's dell (if we could get specs would be cool). I_am_Penguin, can you please clear up which was better on ur PS3 under linux, under virtual box? Cos you say
ran a virtual hackintosh under Linux. Performed great, not as good as a PC but better at least beter than a Mac!. Snowleopard was a bit rubbish but the rest was well oK.

A bit confused. Anyone else willing to run some tests and let us know ??
