[Personal Experiences] Hisense TV's

Good day gents

Looking at upgrading from our old 43" LCD TV sometime in the near future.

Currently it's used for Netflix via an Intel NUC and we have a PS4 Slim connected to it.

We sit about 4.5 meters away from the TV. Is a 55" panel enough of an upgrade or should I rather push for something bigger like a 58" or 65" model? Also, since we use a HTPC on it for most of our content, do we really need a Smart TV or is it a gimmick and can I save the R1000 and go for a 'dumb' TV instead?
55" would be fine and quite a large jump from 43", most new TV's are smart but you can ignore that.

 Might as well then, have you ever played around with the backlight/similar settings, could it damage the set to change the defaults? The video I saw showed values for min, 20, medium, 80 and max, so I'm thinking of changing all the defaults to 60 let's say.
There is that possibility of maybe breaking it. My older Hisense options made no sense, whereas the newer N5000 was more English.

So I bought a Hisense tv a few weeks ago and it's great, I'm loving it. Only one thing that's bothering me, the dynamic backlight. There's no way to switch it completely off.

When I set it to off it still auto dims the backlight when there's a dark scene on the tv making it impossible to see anything. So first question, is there any trick to counteract this auto-dimming - I have every other auto/dynamic setting switched off.

Second question, does it void the warranty to access the service menu? because I'm pretty sure there are some min and max backlight settings there, so I can set the minimum to say 60% so that it doesn't dim all the way down.

The tv model is - 65b7100
There's a way to turn it off in the normal settings . At least on my A6100. Picture settings>backlight. And turn it off

Just going to check it out and see what options I have, or a firmware update might fix it when one gets released, hopefully.

I have switched it off, it just dims slower, I have four options for backlight, Off - Low - Medium - High, it dims the backlight quicker based on the setting, but off doesn't switch the auto-dimming off completely as you'd expect.

Strange. With mine the auto dimming is completely off. Annoying feature.

Thanks - will see what specials are available at Black Friday and decide from there.

Another bummer is that I have an LG Soundbar that accepts Bluetooth and SPDIF as inputs - as luck would have it, the current TV has no optical out, neither does the PS4 Slim or the NUC. For now I am using Bluetooth on the NUC but it's not ideal, and the PS4 Slim sees the Soundbar but refuses to connect. Oi vey!

So an SPDIF output on the TV is definitely a non-negotiable but it seems as if Hisense has it sorted in this regard :)

I had the same issue. Ended up finding that I had to change two settings in the standard menu, can't remember which, I'll check tonight. Think it was dynamic contrast and dynamic backlight. or something.

Awesome, I'll double check tonight, thanks!

I've search on various Hisense websites (ZA, UK, Global) and retailers (Takealot, Dion wired, Makro, Game) and find varying specifications for the Hisense TV models listed below. I'm afraid that the information that I have obtained is incorrect. Could you please assist me in obtaining the correct specifications.

Hi khalidsul23

If you go onto our website, you will be able to download the spec sheets for each of the Hisense TV models.
There is also a comparison sheet on the TV main page.

Hi PhireSide

Most of the Hisense TV's come with SPDIF so you will be fine.
The largest non Smart Hisense TV is the 49B5200PT. As Lupus said, most of the new TV's are Smart.
Depending on which programs you run on the NUC, you could always purchase one of the two Hisense Android TV's (50B7200UW/58B7200UW).
Maybe the Android app store has some of the programs you use on the NUC?

Dynamic backlight and dynamic contrast are both switched off and I tried fiddling with the backlight settings in the service menu and it’s still automatically dimming on dark scenes‍, don’t know what else to do

that's strange, so you basically have everything on except the dynamic backlight, might be my black level then, I always keep it on boost and I've tried adaptive contrast on high and off, so I'll check with medium switched on.

But I'll give your settings a try tonight, thanks.

I'm almost sure it has to be a software problem, because the auto-dimming goes away as soon as I adjust the backlight levels in the service menu, then it doesn't do it anymore, but obviously you have to switch off the tv and back on again to get out of it, then the problem returns. If AstroTurf's settings don't help, I'm phoning them.
