The U8 doesn't have HDMI 2.1, so you're not going to get VRR, ALLM, eARC or 4K@120Hz.

The LG is probably the best budget HDMI 2.1 TV you can get. Has all of the above. Also a 10 bit panel instead of 8 bit.

To get past the local dimming issue, just turn it off altogether. Your blacks won't be as dark, but at least it will be consistent. Not something you're going to notice much during normal viewing. LG also has better viewing angles, picture looks the same even at almost 180 degrees.

In terms of picture quality I'd say the U8 wins. In terms of an overall package and future proofing, the LG wins...

Great summary. This is the main reason I have been undecided in getting the nano86 is the rtings.com review isnt too great. The Q80T is also tempting but the price is a bit high.

This guy goes into the good and bad about the LG. I find video reviews to be much more useful, gives you a chance to check out the sample for yourself.

I honestly don't think it's too bad for the price and it's future proof. Just turn local dimming off...

If you're turning of local dimming then you might as well get the Q70T as it has better native contrast on it's panel than the LG.Also supports 120hz 4k hdmi 2.1 etc etc

Personally I'm looking for a 65" and the Q70T doesn't seem to have a 65" model in SA.

Problem is the Q70T (and even the much more expensive Q80T) only has one HDMI 2.1 port, and the eARC port is still HDMI 2.0. So you can't even run it to a receiver that has more HDMI 2.1 ports. That means you'll only ever have one next gen port.

The Nano86 has 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, one of which is eARC, so you won't face that problem. You can hook it up to an HDMI 2.1 receiver with no issues. And if you look at the videos above, the picture quality is still pretty good.

At this price it comes down to a choice of whether you want better blacks, or ok blacks but fully future proof. And for someone with a next gen console who values future proofing more, I'd be willing to live with the compromise...

I have a hisense smart TV (Vidaa OS). It used to have DSTB Now and Showmax installed. They just disappeared recently. Anyone else?

Why do you want HDMI 2.1 for ARC?

The whole point of HDMI 2.1 is bandwidth. Your audio signal is tiny compared to video so HDMI 2.0 is overkill for ARC as it stands?

In the event that you have more than 1 HDMI 2.1 device, you could utilise the ports on your receiver if/when you do upgrade.

It's not about what you need now, but what you might need later. We don't know what the future holds and what standards may come out that would need the additional bandwidth.

I have a Series X and plan on getting a PS5. That already rules the Samsungs out as I wouldn't be able to use it without swapping the cable each time, which is a PITA if your TV is mounted...

Yeah the future expansion makes sense. I'm more wondering about the ARC. I don't think ARC will benefit at all from 2.1 in our lifetime.
 
Hi all, just go myself a a Hisense 50" the 50A7100F model to replace my 10 year old 46' Samsung, and I must say for a budget 4K tv I'm quite impressed, especially for somebody that does not spend a lot of time in front of at TV.
However can anybody tell me what the latest firmware version for the TV is?
Also is anybody having issues with Prime Video where the video displays "fine" and then all of a sudden the image is rather bright? almost as if the Tv is trying to compensate for a low light image? seems like it only limited to Prime Videos as Netfix and Showmax videos display 100%

Currently have the following
LEDN50D36P in the bedroom, have had it 6 years now and it's been pretty solid, going to a friend to replace their old 40" Samsung.
In the lounge currently is a 58N5000UW which isn't too bad. But 7" make a difference right?

Do you get the 4 year warranty from the Vodabucks deal?
I have to say that is a very good price for the TV.
 
So Vodacom sends RAM to bring me a voucher, that I then have to reimburse and then a 3rd party will contact me, why couldn't they just email that?

Yup that's what I thought would happen, as I mean the send a RAM truck that could've fitted the TV.
