Sucks to see so many professional photographers' pics in the final. Would like if it was amateur only :D

Congrats though...

I don't know who you had in mind but I am by no means a professional photographer, it's a hobby I have picked up over the last year :) Agreed the benefit to the ox pecker photo was a zoom lens. In terms of photoshopping on the hippo, it was a B&W conversion and some dodging on the already over exposed water :) it's probably more then what I would usually do to a photo but wanted to isolate the hippo and the overexposed water just looks cool :)

In the end each to their own as to how much they change or edit photos, there will always be a divide between the editors and purists. The film photographers were well versed in the art of dodging and burning photos :p (At least there are no HDR photos in the mix!)

It wasn't a requirement to post which camera or lens was used but I think there is equal amount of skill in getting a good photo out of a point and shoot as well as shooting manual on a DSLR each offer their own challenges!

I take the photos for my enjoyment and if others can enjoy them then bonus. Thank you for the selection and those who voted!

So many nice pics, was a really tough choice, but went with No8 after much deliberation.

Doubt it, it is more the person who has the expensive camera and editing skills
Subject, framing (composition), exposure . . . all rank higher than camera equipment when it comes to making a photograph. It's the difference between art and a snapshot.

I voted for the Dragonfly as it seemed to me to be one of the most difficult to shoot.
But they are all awesome pics and everyone of them deserves recognition!
Well done guys!

All great pics. So tough to choose a winner. In the end the one I'd wish to have displayed in home would be No. 9. Stunning!

All great, but I went with Photo 9: cold winter's morning - there's just something so awesome about that picture.

give everyone a fair chance
My view (for what it may be worth ) :

Images in this type of competition usually centre around "Composition", which is largely instrument independent.
As someone who has two 35mm SLRs and four digital cameras, (ranging from a humble 3MP P&S through to a Canon DSLR) I can give you a plethora of examples.

What does differ from photographer to photographer is Experience (described by someone as the 'Eye').
The experienced camera user will have a much higher success rate when it comes to images that openly differentiate themselves from those from a less experienced photographer.

However, quite often, the user of the P&S (the less experienced person) is at the right place at the right time, and also captures those 'Wow' moments, irrespective of composition.

I do follow the line of thought that every person has a creative side, but few exercise that ability, mostly (I've found) due to self doubt.

Where I would agree with you, is that future such events make provision for subdivision of images into "Minimal PP" (limited to cropping and minor touch-up) and "Full PP" ones.
Thus (imho) the amateur would be motivated to improve their efforts to the full limitations of the instruments available to them, while the more experienced (not necessarily owners of more expensive equipment) would battle against their peers.
Naturally, this would also depend on the honesty of the submissions into the two catagories.

Then again, I could be wrong. :whistling:

To conclude, here's an example of what a reasonably simple 3MP camera can do:

Tough choice between 1,6 and 9 for me. All of these are great shots.
In the end, there can only be 1... :D
