A plane from Sydney, Australia, crash-landed at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning, the Airports Company of SA (Acsa) said.

"At this stage only 50 passengers have been accounted for," said Acsa spokeswoman Unathi Batyashe-Fillis.

There were 290 passengers on the plane.

The following is a retraction issued by the South African Press Association:

SUBS/NEWSEDS: Please KILL our 'PLANECRASH-ORTAMBO'' issued from JOHANNESBURG on Tuesday, November 30 and headlined 'PLANE CRASHES AT OR TAMBO'. The Airports Company of SA (Acsa) has advised Sapa that it was only a drill.

Maybe i am having a slow day, but how do you have a crash landing drill on a real flight?
This doesnt make any kind of sense

my guess:
evacuate non-essential personell from the runway and move stuff out of the way.
get the people in the plane to do standard crash procedure (brace, masks, life-vests if you like)
fly plane, land it somewhere at the end of the runway
get fire-engines to chase it down and spray foam everywhere.
deploy yellow plastic slides, all the people jump out.
have a foam party.
mop up and park the plane.

Clearly that spokesperson should be fired.... how do you go from "only 50 passengers have been accounted for" to "it was a drill" ?!

Crashing 290 innocent people does not sound like a drill. It sounds like a big ***** up being covered up by the airline.

We can use ANC lingo on this:

Unathi Batyashe-Fillis needs to be re-deployed :D
