Plasma vs LCD

Alright then.
Because of you guys and many others all over the internet, I have gone and bought the 42" Samsung plasma tv, 450 model.
Paid R7999 for it.
I really wanted the 40" SONY Bravia V-Series LCD, but got this, not because its cheaper, but because its supposed to be a better tv.

Hope it is :)

Good buy.
I've got the slightly older model 430. Never looked back.

I use my TV for sport 90% of the time and last weekend I watched most stuff on a LCD when we visited my brother.
Immediately spotted the motion blur and it actually hurt my eyes.
Granted, the LCD is not brand new and it was SD content. Blu-Ray stuff looks awesome on both LCD & Plasma.

The Samsung shop at Canal Walk had the 430 for R7999 and the 450 for R8299.
Saleman said only difference is that the 450 has one extra hdmi port and a pc connector, he wouldn't lower the price.
I'm planning to connect via hdmi anyway.

Went to audio vision and they had the same prices, same guy owns both stores apparently.
Salesman there said that the 450 has a slightly faster processing engine as well.
Gave me the 450 for R7999, so now I don't have to work out the differences myself. :)

When I bought mine the 430 was the latest model.

How I would love to have that PC connection that the 450 has.
At the moment I connect my laptop to TV with an S-Video cable and the quality is not that great.

I've always had LCD's and my brother is a huge supporter of them too, i'm not knocking LCD, it's a great tech, especially as the screens and tech develops, but going to plasma was the best thing i ever did. Movies are so much more "deeper". it's really a great improvement. I still have my LCD, which is my PS3 gaming unit now, but i haven't played much cause i've been glued to the plasma.

What's the cheapest big brand 50-inch FHD Plasma or 46-47-inch FHD LCD?

Samsung b550 plasma (50 " Full HD) is a really great tv for the price. A guy said that he paid 13.2 K for one recently. not sure where though. Just search for b550 on the forum.

I have a b650 plasma and the picture quality is actually stunning. the ps3 on it is awesome and blu rays are spectacular. Have absolutely no regrets and it is way better than my Sony LCD in pq.

Game has a special on the 50B550 FHD plasma from thursday @ R15999. It's the cheapest "advertised" price i've seen. Although i got mine for R13200. So there is plenty room for these guys to negotiate. Add R2000 off on the game special + R2799 i saved off my TV = R4799! We getting screwed horribly in SA.

Herch or something

R15k is what I paid for my 40-inch 720p LCD TV 3 years ago. I'm not willing to spend more than R13k so if anyone finds a deal on a 50-inch FHD plasma please let me know. Checked http://www.hirschs.co.za/ and they're just like the other stores.

I'm confused, is it LED or LCD? The seller seems to have been around for about a year and a half so maybe it's legit. Postage is only R120.

It's LED but even LCD would be a steal at that price. I've asked him a few questions so let's wait and see if he answers.

Somehow I feel he's about to scam 20+ people and disappear like that other bidorbuy scammer who had 100+ good ratings and after a while took a whole bunch of orders (and money) and ducked.

Maybe I should read properly next time. It's an LCD TV (see general - it says product type: LCD TV), but like I said, it's a bargain at that price.

The good: Produces relatively deep black levels; accurate color; very good dejudder processing; sleek styling with 1.2-inch thick panel; extensive picture controls; extremely energy-efficient.

The bad: Expensive; less-uniform screen than other LCDs; poor off-angle viewing; backlight fluctuates with program brightness; dark areas tinged bluer; shiny screen can cause reflections in bright rooms; red frame isn't for everyone.

The bottom line: Although it delivers fine picture quality, except for a few flaws, the ultrathin Samsung UNB6000 series will appeal mainly to style seekers who don't mind spending more money.

And here I just thought I'd set my mind on the Samsung 42B430 Plasma and now I read these things.....

Man i should have did more research on "burning in" my Plasma before i bought it.

Damn you CeeBeeBees and your yellow logo!

I will be using JScreenFix and that other link provided in this thread to sort it out.

I'm suffering with severe image retention though. Just 20 minutes of a static image on the screen and it's visible for another 30 minutes (gradually fading over the 30 minutes or 10 if I use the white screen).

Logged a complaint online with Samsung SA on Monday.. Set is a 50inch less than 6 months old...

I thought everyone was saying that image burn in is not an issue on these newer sets?!?!

Does your sets not have screen savers?
My Samsung Plasma goes in to SS mode if there is a static image on for a certain period. About 5 minutes. I've never timed it.
The Samsung logo jumps around on a black screen.

I've got the exact same set Lance.
You cannot go wrong. Excellent Plasma.

Thanks, Apoc, that's the sort of thing I need to hear! ;)

Getting it this weekend from Game.... I've decided! :D

As an aside, house sitting a friend's house this weekend and they have what looks like about a 40" Sony Bravia LCD and I just watched some 7s rugby. He claims it is a 100Hz set and I still noted some "comet trails" when the players were running..

Correct. I stood in Game for a whole Currie Cup match last year to decide which screen to take.
Every LCD, from Sony to Samsung, had "Motion Blur" and that is what made me decide on a plasma.

I eventually bought a Sinotech from Makro(because of their 14 day exchange policy) and took it back a day later. I had a bad experience.
Paid in the extra bucks for the Samsung and I've never been happier.
90% sport being watched on my set. And some downloaded series/movies from time to time.

That pretty much mimics my viewing habits. The household will of course add in a fair whack of cartoon viewing and some series but those look good on most screens anyway. Can't wait to get my hands on the screen now... but away at the moment so it'll need to wait a few days! ;) It's like knowing you are getting a bicycle for Christmas but not being able to ride it until Christmas day :D
