Plasma vs LCD

There are 3 basic differences when it comes to deciding between LCD and Plasma

1. LCD been backlit, you never get a true black colour, something that has been mentioned already. Often you will get a grey/black or a blue/black, not a true black like in plasma. This gives you better depth perception in your picture.

2. Motion. Although LCD have been making strides on this area, you still can't beat a plasma with regards to motion. I am under correction but think that the fastest commercial LCD is rated at 2ms. Your plasmas are around 0.001 ms - basically instantaneous. In layman terms you don't suffer motion lag when watching on a plasma, especially sports and fast action movies.

3. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is view angle. To achieve the best possible picture out of an LCD you need to sit perpendicular to the screen. The more off center you move away from the TV the more "bled out" the picture becomes. Plasma has a view angle of 180 degrees meaning that in a typical lounge seating enviroment viewers will always see the best possible picture.

The downside of plasma is that they suffer from reflection. However the usage of non reflective material in the glass has reduced this, but it can still be a problem. Fortunately you can rectify this by adjusting your lighting and using curtaning to darken your room.

BTW, I own a 47" LCD just for the record. My next purchase will be a 42 or 50" plasma because of the points above.

Below are two easy to understand explanations regarding LCD/Plasma response times.

"Why is motion lag an issue with LCD and not with Plasma technology?

LCD technology relies on twisting nematic crystals to generate its color and light throughput information. The speed of these twisting crystals may not be fast enough at times of fast motion display or particularly side to side panning of fast motion display. Nematic refers to the arrangement of long axes of liquid crystal molecules forming parallel lines. Plasma technology does not rely on twisting crystals but rather each individual pixel carries its own light and color information by way of red, green and blue phosphors. CRT tube TVs also worked in a similar way and did not have a motion lag problem. Phosphor based color production also creates the somewhat more realistic color information that plasma TVs enjoy"

"LCD panels have a tendency to blur images particularly during fast moving scenes in movies, sports, and gaming events. This is due to LCD pixels that remain lit between frames - leading to a sort of a sample-and-hold effect as a result of the relatively long time required by the liquid crystals to align themselves i.e. twist or untwist - to represent a new pixel state.

This twisting action of liquid crystals acts as a light valve that allows or blocks light emitted by the backlight source, from reaching the glass surface of the display panel in response to the driving video signal."

And now for actual numbers:

Lets say you have a 1m long, 2ms response time screen and a moving object takes 1 second to go accross the screen. i.e. traveling at 1m/s or 1000mm per second
How far will the object travel in 2ms?
This will be 1000/500 = 2mm
So we should see a 2mm trail behind an object moving accross a 1m screen in 1 second.
4mm trail behind an object moving ar 2m/s
8mm trail behind an object moving at 4m/s
etc..

Hmmm...make up your own mind whether this is acceptable or not...

I'd stay away from the 4 series , it's old panels , and also that buzzing problem....

It's not the 4th series which is old panels, it's the A panels. The B panels, are 2009 models, i.e, 42A400 vs 42B430. Amazingly, the 4th series have come off quite well regarding the Buzzing noise. On a ratio of all the models, the 4th series is the least likely to have the buzz. Just watch out for those guys on AVS forums. If you had to read and trust all those posts, you would never buy another TV ever. You'de dig out your old 72cm tube and stay with it. The assumed purpose of forums is to ask others for advise for problems, ie, they are normally full of complaints. The happy guys have no need to forum.

Morning guys,

I'm busy shopping for a new TV as the lightning struck my old one :p

Anyway, I'm shopping for a TV which is at least 40" leaning more towards 42".

My problem new is the mixed reviews when it comes to the Plasma vs LCD :( From what I gather, the Plamsa is better this heavier (May be wrong) I can't really see that much of a price difference between the 2 so I'm pretty confused.

As an example:

SAMSUNG SA TV 42” PLASMA 42B430 - R 8499.99 (HD ready)
HD Ready
High contrast Ratio
100 Hz
SRS TRU Surround HD

SAMSUNG SA TV 40” LCD 40B532 R10999.99
Full HD (1920 x 1080p)
3 x HDMI Connections
High Contrast
USB 2.0

WTF is full HD and HD ready?

If you're on the lookout for a new television, you must do some research by reading the reviews especially the ones coming from the experts and compare LCD TV ratings of various brands. That way, you are assured that you will be getting the best value for your purchase. Just my 2 cents.

Got a SAMSUNG SA TV 42” PLASMA 42B430 @ R 7,500 at the weekend - no buzz audible, unlike the SD PVR hard drive noise that drives me crazy - now just got to get a HD PVR

I bougth the Samsung 42" Plasma (This thing is amazing )

While I was there I also bougth the Akai Blueray player and figured I might as well upgrade to an HD PVR. All good and well till I got home, the HD PVR needs a new LNB and a crap load of cables :( I declined the installation as I figured it will work on the same setup as my old Single view decoder :o

Now I need to spend another R 2k on having the PVR installed /cry.

But honestly, when I was in store I could see the difference between the LCD and Plasma TV's. What got me was looking at the screens from an angle, The LCD doesn't look so good if viewed from an angle, but the Plasma is the same no matter what angle.

Also, no buzzing on my Plasma so I'm actually massively impressed, thank you all for all your input. I'm sure I made the right purchase all thanx to you guys.

Man i should have did more research on "burning in" my Plasma before i bought it.

Damn you CeeBeeBees and your yellow logo!

I will be using JScreenFix and that other link provided in this thread to sort it out.

+1, been using the white screen and the logo is all but gone...

I'm suffering with severe image retention though. Just 20 minutes of a static image on the screen and it's visible for another 30 minutes (gradually fading over the 30 minutes or 10 if I use the white screen).

Logged a complaint online with Samsung SA on Monday.. Set is a 50inch less than 6 months old...

How you enjoying HD PVR? Super14 in HD is going to be something to behold...

Love it - got it hitched to a HD PVR now and image seems much better than on SD PVR even on SD DSTV channels - still no buzz, no screen burn. Tried the recommended settings posted above but think the standard out of the box settings suit me better.

On my 50" Samsung even after a marathon watch by my daughter, it disappears fairly quickly. same with the supersport logo.

i used to run the white screen every sunday for 3 hours the first month. nowadays it is very infrequent.

i use my HTPC on my plsma and i sometimes use the terminal to run housekeeping. even that fades pretty quickly now. or maybe i just don't notice the retention.

I think the Plasma was left on for at least 12 hours :erm: :o

This is the first real sport match I have watched on the new plasma now.....

All I can say is: NOTHING BEATS PLASMA + HD DSTV !!!!

I'm blown away tbh, just bloody amazing :)

No doubt in my mind that I have made the right choice, again: Thank you all for the brilliant advice :)

How is it going with the tv's?

Just thought of posting in this thread while watching the Cheetahs vs Bulls game, first real sport I have watched. This setup is AMAZING !!!!!!

I need a sound system now :p

You are damaging your screen when you use the WHITE SCREEN function. You are basically depleting the panel that way. It's better to ignore any burn in as it all goes away within minutes to hours and even when most evident, can't be seen if you adjust the contrast or ambient light.

Alright then.
Because of you guys and many others all over the internet, I have gone and bought the 42" Samsung plasma tv, 450 model.
Paid R7999 for it.
I really wanted the 40" SONY Bravia V-Series LCD, but got this, not because its cheaper, but because its supposed to be a better tv.

Hope it is :)

I chose which type dependant on the sunshine. If the sun will shine on the screen / near then I get an LCD (even if it's just a reasonably bright room).
If not a plasma has eevrything else except the reflective glass front is better or as good...

Although, now that I'm living properly in South Africa I am waiting to get the best of both worlds without being completely ripped off for an LED.

Why are electronic goods so expensive here?

Shipping costs, import duties, profiteering...
