Sent a letter off to Mr Bashier Sallie of Telkom (apparently a bigwig) asking him whether Telkom will be implemeting ADSL on a cheaper rate to schools etc on a rebate scheme, i.e. thay get charged less as long as it is used for school work etc.

NO REPLY

I am stating it now Mr Sallie:

When you implent this, i.e at leat a 50% price drop on installation and line rental / ISP charges as well as a static IP address per school (no capping either), upon them purchasing an ADSL modem router, I will install and configure a firewall / content filter solution for them in my own time at no charge if they (the school or someone who feels like donating a 600MHZ plus commodity PC, or even Telkom)supply the hardware. Not more than two a month, in the Cape Town northern suburbs, and teach the IS staff to administer it, and render telephonic support, and teach an introductory TCP/IP course of 3 hours on a Saturday to interested pupils.

Come on Mr. Sallie, do it for the kids.

you have my support on this one. If you would like any help wrt to firewall setup, give me a shout. I will gladly help.

Thanks grubman,

Maybe our linux friendly community could post similar in other regions of our beautiful country, like Gauteng and KZN?

Come on guys, I am working on a conformity sheet for ADSL firewalls and will post this ASAP.

RPM would it be illegal for us to have list of approved, not the bull on Telkom site, ADSL modems / routers? Maybe even have a list of suppliers that have working ADSL modems or to put pressure on ICASA to get their conformity testing wrt to ADSL devices done quickly so that we do not have a situation where technician blame our equipment.

Hi Herbs

I will be glad to publish anything helpful to ADSL users. If anybody can supply such a list it will appear on this website! As long as users are not pestered by advertising.

While on this topic, isn’t it nice to have a site without adds popping up everywhere? We will keep it that way :-)

Regards,

RPM

Thanks RPM,

No ADS is a welcome relief to the standard overseas fare!!!

How would you like the info on modems etc and where they can be purchased and the pricing involved?

The ICASA thing is a problem, I am sure you will agree, maybe all forum users could reply as to their setup and modem type i.e. OS type etc. under a new topic heading?

Bye,
Herbs
