PLEASE HELP!! Acer Aspire 3 - Win7 64bit ISO

Hi guys,

This might sound like a stupid, or potentially over-complicated question, but either way - I'm exhausted after three attempts and need some help.

I have an Acer Aspire 3 in front of me, (Core i5 7th Gen, 4GB RAM) that ships with Windows 10 64bit as standard. Problem is, the person I'm trying to help out isn't willing to fork out $$ for additional RAM, and it's tremendously clear Windows 10 isn't a good runtime on this notebook. Hence I have attempted Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, and even though it runs beautifully in a VM, when I do a clean install there are ZERO network and USB 3.0 drivers that seem to work. The official Acer website itself also only lists Win8 and Win10 support on this darn notebook.

Anyone have any suggestions in regards to a workaround??
 
Really tricky. Many laptop BIOS are specifically designed to only work with a single OS. It’s possible that you have reached that limitation

I have seen it before where Dell for instance don’t supply Windows 10 drivers for older machines. In a 2013 laptop, there was no audio. The chipset was not supported
 
If you're going to such an old version of Windows, just put on Mint and be done with it. Mint is close enough to Windows 7 the user should be fine.
Don't go for an older version of Windows when you can get a decent OS.
 
Install Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell then - for all intents & purposes, the user will see an interface that is very similar to Windows 7 (and has similar system requirements) - if or when he eventually forks out for more RAM - he can upgrade it to Windows 10 as well and have had around 10 years use of his laptop before it is eventually rendered obsolete.

What is the Lifecycle Policy for Windows 8.1?​

Windows 8.1 reached the end of Mainstream Support on January 9, 2018, and will reach end of Extended Support on January 10, 2023.

With the general availability of Windows 8.1, customers on Windows 8.0 had until January 12, 2016, to move to Windows 8.1 to remain supported.

Windows 10 Home & Pro follows the Modern Lifecycle Policy.​


This applies to the following editions: Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations

Important - Microsoft will continue to support at least one Windows 10 Semi-Annual Channel until October 14, 2025.

While mint is good imho EndeavorOS with xcfe (default DM) is better. Of course either one with a lts kernel...

Thank you so much for all the feedback and advice! Glad I've finally decided to join MyBroadband, clearly an awesome community.

After much back and forth research I've finally concluded that 7th and 8th Generation Intel processors simply do not support Windows 7. There's no decent workaround, and no sideload solution.

If it was for myself, my wife or son, I would most definitely have opted for a Linux distro and lived happily ever after with Steam, OpenOffice and a Virtual Machine on the odd occasion something actually calls for Windows. Unfortunately I'm not going to expect an old dog to learn new tricks, and I think Ivan offered the closest thing possible to a perfect solution. Thanks a million, didn't think of Windows 8.1 with a classic shell.

If you can get a second hand 256/512GB SSD over at carbonite.co.za it will make windows 10 much more usable.

Then at a later stage pick up some second hand RAM.
