Please help me make a choice!

Jees if I had a choice between R50-R60k and the new car smell... i'd take the money without a doubt...
 
Ok I think i am going to have a look at second hand cars, but what should i look at?? do not want to buy something that will cost me a fortune to maintain.

When you get second hand cars take it for a run around neighbourhood do full car check like you do for car liscence tests.

Also check the Roadworth Certificate and any service/maintenance plan it may still have that is valid

If you hate smoke check if the car wasn't used by a smoker since smell lingers in cars :P (My one fear when getting a second hand car)

Go for the top rated service car makes (Honda, Toyota etc) they normally give least trouble and cost less to maintain. Check the car magazines to see whos the top rated make for 2010 (last one was Honda if i remember right :P).

Two months ago I bought a brand new Figo,I'm happy with the car so far. It's R110000 for a new Figo with aircon, ABS brakes, radio and power steering compared to a R128000 Vivo with the same features as a Figo. I say go for a Figo, the Vivo looks better though.

I agree with this statement. The amount of car I got for under R100k is insane.
 
Think i have narrowed it down

Hi guys I think my final choice will be between a vivo and a 1 year old corolla 1.3 professional with +- 30000Km @ R135000. what would you suggest?

Electric windows are stupid my friend drives a Jetta and the window thingy broke. It cost R2000 to replace and you can't drive with it broken coz then the window is always open.
 
Get a new car if you can. Its your first car and you don't want to screw the experience up. :)
 
Yes it is his first time but if he takes his time with a second hand one he might enjoy the experience.Besides by having a good run in on a slightly used model premature firing and engine lag gets eliminated.

Buying a new car as your first car is literally just pissing money away for no reason whatsoever in my opinion.
 
Speaking from personal experience ie. I have no rational/scientific basis for my opinions apart from a few hard knocks that I've taken. So I'm certain there will be folks that disagree, but that is why it's a fourm.

My experiences of owning my first car:

* If it's your first car, you are *probably* going to crash it at some point. I'm not saying that you'll write it off, but you are going to make a ding in your car.
* It will need to be repaired. For this reason buy a car model that has a large spare parts market. The cost of "Agent Approved" parts will make your wallet bleed.
* However in relation to the point above, avoid a model that will be harvested for it's spare parts. I had a Golf that was stolen and then ripped to pieces for it's parts.
* Do not think for a second you are going to be getting any money back from the dam thing when you sell it. The most effective way to soften the punch of a car purchase is it have a BIG deposit.

Neither would I, but its the KIND of stuff thats available at R135k....
 
i don't know how you would even consider a Vivo, when a Ford Figo, full house top line one is R125 000. then you get that "hi tech" such as... electric windows :/

Maybe if you've seen a Figo in real life.
 
I'll say it again - go and have a look at a Fiat 500 1.2 for R135k brand new. So much cooler and higher specced than a Vivo/Figo.
