Hi guys

I was wondering if any of you guys can figure something out...

I have a 7mbps line (capped :() from telkom. Usually my line gets about 600-700kbps dl speed on a torrent or free flow website. As for the last few weeks my LOL ping has been through the roof my war3 is fine though. Sometimes my websites load and the next moment it doesn't.

I gave them a call... as always. Asked them to reset my ports and same speed. My ping to Cape town server (where I live) - 131ms... she says the line is fine. Makes sense much? I got a poor 300kbps dl speed on the speed test with that MS.

Any one know of anything that I can try... Like killing the head of telkom?

No you don't - you have a 384kbps, 1Mbps, 4Mbps or a 10Mbps line. Those are the only speeds telkom offer.

I think what would help is if you post a screenshot of your 600-700kbps download so we can all be on the same page.

A 10Mbps can be "up to 10 mb". It can sync at lower speeds depending on exchange load and distance from exchange. You see plenty of 4mb lines only able to do 3mb as well.

You could try getting them to temporarily drop the speed a bit, say 6mb and see if it makes a difference. It's possible you've got a slight bit of extra interference now that is affecting your 7mb speed.

It's also possible it's your pc/router/etc.

I would try some/all of the following to rule out other possiblities:

* If you havn't already - try another ISP
* Ask a friend to bring a laptop/pc round (and connect ONLY that pc to the network and check pings/bandwidth).
* Swap router with a friends/spare/etc and see if there's any difference
* Get telkom to drop speed to 6mb or lower and see if there's any difference.

+1

My "up to 10 Mb" syncs reliably at 6 Mb due to the distance from the exchange.

yes hes got 7mb line , i have checked hes router, hes line does sync at 7mb.

hes using my wa account, to test atm.

Aaah, understood. Either way, it seems daft given the cost, to pay for 10Mbps and get 7/6. Better (IMO) to get a stable 4, though I doubt it would solve his problem.

You don't pay more for a "up to 10Mbs" ADSL line, it's called DSL Fastest and covers what you refer to as 4Mbs & 10Mbs, your theoretical max speed depends on whether your exchange is 10Mbs enabled.

He has throughput over 4Mbps so is paying for that at least surely? Or is the capped product rated for any speed (I guess it would?).

Yes, the Cape Town server seems to be crap. Always gives me bad speed and ping. Then I test to Newlands and get much better results. But the best ping and speed I get when testing to Jo'burg. Strange but true.

The line speeds are 4 to 10Mbs, so either you're close to the exchange or far away. The data often gets offered at different speeds by ISPs, so if you really want to you could pay TK for a 4-10Mbs line & then pay your ISP for a 1Mbps account. If you did that your max speed would be 1Mbps so would be a bit silly. Often Capped accounts are unshapped so they will perform at the max of the line speed unless TK, the ISP, Seacom/SAT3... have problems.

Correct, ignoring shaping and exotic account types, uncapped accounts are speed limited (eg: 1Mbs uncapped, 4Mbs uncapped) whereas capped accounts generally run at the max attainable line speed (eg: Telkom capped, Axxess R19/GB).

Is your War3 a local server and your LOL an international server? I cannot see how it could be your line or telkom etc if your one gaming experience is fine and the other not. So to me it is either the actual server you are playing on (host) or if it is that one is international and the other not.

But I would use a different ISP (as heriticangel is kindly doing for you) this will give you an idea if it is the line or ISP part of the problem.

shoot me your dsl line number in pm and I"ll screenshot the stats from the DSLAM side for you, may help you identify where the problem can be

100% correct sir

I guess it makes sense for capped accounts to run at full speed since the sooner you get capped, the sooner they get more money :)

Nice - you can do that? You work for TK?
