Please help me with my addiction

A little off-topic here but:

I ocassionally pop a diazepam for for my backache in order to sleep better at night, 5mg as prescribed by my doctor. Been doing this for a few weeks now but not daily. Can I expect withdrawal symptoms? I see why people say this pill is so addictive, it makes me feel euphoric and relaxed.

I really don't think this is a fake thread. It's not attention seeking at all.

Thanks for the link it doesn't explain how people self diagnose themselves so easily. If you are addicted to something you just automatically have an addictive personality?

If you know you are like that why not just say no from the start? Or do you only find this out after you are addicted? But then everybody that has an addiction has the same personality trait?. It is just a PC term for I shouldn't have started?

I don't want to start a fight. I have a sister that uses this excuse for bloody everything, but she still puts herself in all the situations where she is not willing to say no. If you don't want to and know you have a weakness why not stay away from situations that can escalate?

I have said no to drugs on numerous occasions. If I said yes does that mean I have an Addictive personality ( it just sound as if everybody is going to get addicted to me .. Sorry It does. ) or does that mean I just couldn't say no the second and the third and the 20th time?

Yes I know it is a disease and I don't look down on people that has fallen into the trap.

Or do these people have an arrogant personality? ( not trying to be mean hear me out. ) They were arrogant enough to think they are strong willed enough not to ever get addicted?

I mean every time I was presented with the option, my first thoughts was, Oh No I might get addicted. Does this mean I have an addictive personality and realized it? Or does it just mean I'm not arrogant and are strong willed ( oke I'm stubborn as a mule)

Are all addicts suffering from "addictive personality"?
Did they only find it out after the addiction?
Is saying that you have an addictive personality not just an excuse not to quit or just start again.
Addiction is chemical not a personality trait.

I do not think the OP has an addictive personality. It takes balls to want to stop and ask for advice.
She should stop saying it.
Just stop.
Say. I was the biggest idiot on two legs look what I have done. Look at what I am willing to give up. I will not fall into the trap again.

Yes she will need help to stop and will continue her struggle to say no. It just feels like an obstacle you put in your own way when you put that out there about yourself.

You do not have an addictive personality. You made a mistake. We all do. You are willing to fix yours. That is all that matters.

Please Read this with no condescending, snarkey or judgmental tone. I'm honestly intrigued and obviously have my own opinions and can not talk to my sister about it because she has a fatalistic view on this "personality disorder" of hers. That is it. I feel it is so fatalistic.. Very DQ.

Grow up all of you chaps. That poor woman is going through hell and all you can say is "ohnoes, she should have said no to drugs and should not have started using them in the first place."

Notice that she said that a doctor gave her those pills as a prescription at first, she didn't got out actively looking to get high. It was just an easy escape mechanism for her later to continue using drugs.

I have spoken to her over Skype last night and it turns out that we actually met once when I was in JHB at Sandton City. She is a beautiful young woman and a wonderful person but deeply troubled. Don't be so quick to judge cos you might find yourself in her shoes one day.

Edit: Kaylee is now in rehab.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I've booked myself in to a local rehab clinic after talking to my boss and I spoke to my family. They were supportive and understanding and offered me a lot of assistance.

Good for you, that is the only way you going to get clean.

Jesus.. Try alcohol or marijuana? Not good to substitute one drug for another but if that helps you get off the pills, it will be easier to stop weed and booze.

I don't know about the company's legal obligation here, I do know that your big companies generally do assist their employees with these. There is no shame about your condition and they cant fire you, especially if noted that job related they tend to take a supportive role. Alternatively if you have med aid (assume compulsary?) then detox rehab is covered, just find out how. Im no doc, but I think you need a different one.

Not exactly sure what the deal is but I know they can't just fire you for it and need to help you get back on your feet or support you in some way or another.

You bring up some good points and yes, it is just one of many excuses that are used by addicts for using.
Does not mean it does not exist though.

The problem is that most people who start using either don't know, are in "immortal teenager mode" and ignore the warning signs or are copying their parents/role models behaviour.

For me it's kind of like denying yourself when it comes to impulse buying, only you can't simply walk out of the shop and think it over.
It's an impulse that you are carrying around with you, constant mental debates with yourself about why you need it, how you can afford it and how it's so cool. The comparison ends there though because with an impulse buy once you have the item you have it. With addiction once you had the item the whole cycle starts again.
While you are having the item the cycle has already started and because your inhibitions are lowered at the time you are much more likely to do it again.

Take that feeling when you buy that most awesome thing (shoes, pc, car, house, whatever) and imagine being able to get it several times a day, remember the guilt is not part of this because that only comes in the moments before the numbness,

yip they hand them out like sweets without even bothering to inform the patient about the risks involved.

It's clear the OP has been yet another the victim of malpractice by incompetent unaccountable medical 'professionals'.

I actually agree with the weed part but not with the booze part.

I was going to say don't let work know but it seems too late for that. That kind of issue will spread and will prevent you ever being promoted again. The higher up the chain you go the more the stress so any stress related illness or coping issues should be dealt with privately away from the office as once the office knows it will get around and you won't move past it easily. Also the finance world is small with many of the companies swapping staff so it can spread quickly.

Still, going to rehab was a good choice, I would have however pretended I was overseas for a bit while there.

OT: I think I suffer from mild social anxiety, does anyone know what medication I can buy over the counter to help with this and roughly what it would cost or would it be better to stay away from meds and try sort this out by myself?

When I say I have mild social anxiety for me it feels like when I am confronted with groups of people I get nervous and almost close up hasn't always been this way only in the last year or two.
