Plugg uncapped is WAY better than MWEB uncapped

Seems supporting Plugg is like supporting Telkom - unfair advantage anyone? As for Plugg being consistently better than MWEB... As tempted as I am to try them, I have a feeling things are going to get ugly with their ISP clients if IS are effectively selling wholesale to the public. Perhaps it's time for a MyBB article...

I would only see it as an unfair advantage if they (IS) are offering better pricing or even better service to their own consumer ISP than to their resellers. Is this the case?

As far as I understand, their resellers (openweb etc) are still cheaper than Plugg, so no unfair advantage there. If IS is selling DSL cheaper to Plugg than to their resellers, then there is a case for concern for their resellers.

Plugg is very open over their FUP (something Afrihost struggled to explain to their own users while figuring out how a DSL network fits together) and I am pretty sure you can confirm with IS' current resellers what FUP they follow. If it is the same FUP, then again, where is 'unfair advantage'?

Latest MyBroadBand articles cited IS and AlwaysOn offering free Wifi to all uncapped dsl accounts on the IS network, no matter who the "DSL Reseller". Are you able to show proof where Plugg/IS is being unfair to their own ADSL resellers by selling directly to the public?

Unlike Telkom who did compete against their own clients/users, I still have to see where IS competes against their own resellers, unless you have inside information that you would like to share or even help that MyBB article along? I am not sure of when Plugg started trading, but according to the registrar they registered the domain in 2007.

We all have our favourite ISP and this is one debate that will just carry on and on and on and on :P It is actually a good thing to be able to debate over different DSL network providers and their resellers.

Correct me if I am wrong, but in South Africa we only have the following dsl network providers, those with IPC into Telkom:

- Telkom
- MTN Business (Johannesburg IPC)
- MWEB (Johannesburg, Cape Town & Durban IPC)
- IS (Johannesburg & Cape Town IPC)
- WebAfrica (Cape Town IPC)

- Vodacom Business??

Of course, at the end of the day, we all still want more bandwidth for lower prices in South Africa and hopefully that is the one thing we as consumers can agree on :)

I am not a fanboy, anyways doesn't matter.

Imaginet, like openweb, is also cheaper than Plugg, and they are reselling IS bandwidth, although I haven't seen a 10mbit uncapped product on their website.

Well, I would imagine IS would sell dsl accounts at x, and it is then up to the reseller to decide how much they want to resell it to the consumer, so even if Imaginet is more expensive than Plugg, it could be purely because Imaginet added a high mark-up. If you want to shout unfair pricing, you would have to start your investigation by comparing the price that IS sold the dsl accounts or if its ito bandwidth to the resellers rather than the consumer pricing vs what they sell to Plugg.

Before I get flamed by Imaginet FanBoys, I am merely using them as an example.

Hi Tinuva

We do offer 10Mbit accounts, please pm if you would like pricing as we do not advertise it on our website. We have just relaunched our website and pricing please have a look at our new pricing.

NIGHT AND DAY

So happy with plugg, eww to mwebs oversubscribed greed festival.

can you use 1tb per month without being throttled or so?

Nah MWEB is the best isp in SA and the other people should just close the doors

As an Mweb subscriber who is happy with their service, I'm going to say that you have little clue. If you think Mweb can handle SA's entire ADSL subscriber base, you are sadly mistaken. Perhaps you should just stick with Telkom, they are the original monopoly after all ;)

Back when IS was taking the load of Axxess and Afrihost they used to be F*ing awful - from a CPT perspective - could barely ever reach full line speed and the pings weren't good.

Now that the load has shifted, IS is fantastic. I'm using OW Vanilla due to it's price. As far as comparing it to MWEB; I'd say MWEB's peering is a little better than IS (IS doesn't peer with CINX for some stupid reason) but MWEB charges too much.

not sure where you getting your info from, but i can assure you, IS peers at cinx.

i stand corrected, you're right, IS does peer with CINX; when I was on MWEB, Gmail and Google's sites in general all routed through google.cinx.net.za but IS routes internationally. Admittedly an assumption :D

That really is my main gripe with IS is it's international routing of Gmail (I know there's a hosts hack to get around this)

on the other plugg thread, they had this discussion last week or so.

Not sure what's up with Googles CINX pings today; don't have an MWEB account to test on anymore but also used to route via google.cinx.net.za

Surely routing via Google @ cinx would be cheaper than routing internationally?

[EDIT]
I see hop 13 on IS vs. hop 8 on WA look like they are very similar (judging by the IP); am I wrong in assuming this is international on IS's behalf? Any reason for the high pings then if it actually is local?

MWEB charges too much.

This is true. I'm considering moving to Plugg for a month to see... last time I moved for lower cost to an IS provider, I came running back in less than a month.

MWEB is too big. You get lost in the corporate cloud as it were. Facades like mwebguy, facebook pages and call centres.

agreed - MWG is very helpful and all but if your problems / query is beyond MWG's particular job and he has to pass you on to someone else you do get the feel of being lost in the system.
