Porn problem among SA teens

Only a person with blinkers will ignore the fact that porn has a much higher effect on today's society than ever before in history.

I remember being exposed to porn as a teenager. It hasn't made me a rapist, a murderer, a drug addict, a thief, a pimp, a prostitute or promiscuous (as if that means anything). So what exactly is this big hype about porn. What is it doing to our children?

I am more concerned about pop videos that show pop icons who are barely out of their teens wearing the shortest skirts they can lay their hands on. What about videos showing 1 guy surrounded by more half naked women than he could ever hope to get with. What kind of message does that send?

My nephews are trying to emulate guys like John Cena and my niece is trying to Britney Spears or Paris Hilton. I think we have more to worry about from pop media than porn any day.

I have managed fine for 13 years without porn thanks... self control is as useful as your hand for sorting the cravings ;)

Not a porn fan either. It is my opinion that it causes unrealistic expectations within relationships, which will later cause problems problems within teh relationship later on. Just think of someone seeing something in a flic, wanting that and the other partner not willing to participate. Call it an unfulfilled fantasy if you will, but it is going to cause some trouble along the way. Also, porn actors are not normal people. When expectations are placed in that realm of video editing than people lose the ability to be satisfied perhaps. And I would say sanctioning sex between strangers is not the way I would choose to vote with my money, time or mental capacity.

porno for me is and will always be something i love

It is when that love surpasses your love for someone who is actually in your life that a problem can develop...

To our children? I am not an expert, but having a kid learn that sex is all about glamorous large breasted women and well endowed men banging the daylights out of each other every chance they get might cause some unrealistic expectations.

And pop culture, that is a major problem. I'll keep my kids away from that as much as I can as well.

Dunno bout other guys here but I have issues with watching naked men getting themselves off... don't speak for evry1 I guess.

humans have always looked at porn.
going back thousands of years, you name the 'medium' - you'll find the porn -
statues, paintings, carvings, etchings, print, photography, film...

porn is freely available across the West, and in the Nordic regions, where XXX
porn has been available for a loooong time, its proven to have no negative impact
on society.

As regards 'morals' - thats no ones business to try and maintain for a society.
One mans 'morals' are another mans conservative return to repressive apartheid
society.
Remember when everything was closed on Sundays, to 'look after peoples
morals'?

Whining about 'morals' - as if you haven't got enough violence and chaos to
be concerned about.

Grow up, kids. And try resist the fascist impulse to control what constitutes 'decency'.
:P

Internet pornography is the new crack cocaine, leading to addiction, misogyny, pedophilia, boob jobs and erectile dysfunction, according to clinicians and researchers testifying before a Senate committee Thursday.

Witnesses before the Senate Commerce Committee's Science, Technology and Space Subcommittee spared no superlative in their description of the negative effects of pornography.

Mary Anne Layden, co-director of the Sexual Trauma and Psychopathology Program at the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Cognitive Therapy, called porn the "most concerning thing to psychological health that I know of existing today."

"The internet is a perfect drug delivery system because you are anonymous, aroused and have role models for these behaviors," Layden said. "To have drug pumped into your house 24/7, free, and children know how to use it better than grown-ups know how to use it -- it's a perfect delivery system if we want to have a whole generation of young addicts who will never have the drug out of their mind."

Pornography addicts have a more difficult time recovering from their addiction than cocaine addicts, since coke users can get the drug out of their system, but pornographic images stay in the brain forever, Layden said.

Jeffrey Satinover, a psychiatrist and advisor to the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality echoed Layden's concern about the internet and the somatic effects of pornography.

"Pornography really does, unlike other addictions, biologically cause direct release of the most perfect addictive substance," Satinover said. "That is, it causes masturbation, which causes release of the naturally occurring opioids. It does what heroin can't do, in effect."

The internet is dangerous because it removes the inefficiency in the delivery of pornography, making porn much more ubiquitous than in the days when guys in trench coats would sell nudie postcards, Satinover said.

Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kansas), the subcommittee's chairman, called the hearing the most disturbing one he'd ever seen in the Senate. Brownback said porn was ubiquitous now, compared to when he was growing up and "some guy would sneak a magazine in somewhere and show some of us, but you had to find him at the right time."

The hearing came just days after a controversy over a sexually suggestive Monday Night Football ad that has many foreseeing a crackdown on indecency by the Federal Communications Commission.

It is unclear what the consequences of Thursday's hearing will be since it was not connected to any pending or proposed legislation.

Brownback, a conservative Christian, is also scheduled to be rotated off the sub-committee in the next session.

When Brownback asked the panelists for suggestions about what should be done, the responses were mild, considering their earlier indictment of pornography. Several suggested that federal money be allocated to fund brain-mapping studies into the physical effects of pornography.

Judith Reisman of the California Protective Parents Association suggested that more study of "erototoxins" could show how pornography is not speech-protected under the First Amendment.

The panelists all agreed that the government should fund health campaigns to educate the public about the dangers of pornography. The campaign should combat the messages of pornography by putting signs on buses saying sex with children is not OK, said Layden.

However, as the panelists themselves acknowledged, there is no consensus among mental health professionals about the dangers of porn or the use of the term "pornography addiction."

Many psychologists and most sexologists find the concepts of sex and pornography addiction problematic, said Carol Queen, staff sexologist for the San Francisco-based, woman-owned Good Vibrations.

Queen questioned the validity of the panel for not including anyone who thinks "pornography is not particularly problematic in most people's lives."

Queen acknowledges she can name people who have compulsive and destructive behavior centered on pornography, but argues that can happen with other activities, such as gambling and shopping.

Queen also criticized the methodology behind research showing that pornography stimulates the brain like drugs do, saying the research needs to take into account how sex itself stimulates the brain.

"There's no doubt the brain lights up when sexually aroused," Queen said.

Queen too would like to see more money devoted to research on sex, but thinks it is unlikely that researchers on either side of the divide are likely to receive large grants any time soon.

Studies intended to show the harmful effects of pornography must contend with ethical rules prohibiting harm to human subjects, while sex researchers have a hard time getting any funding, unless their study is specifically HIV-related, according to Queen.

they are blaming boob jobs on porn? how have u seen how many small titted female porn stars there? plenty

boob jobs come from society and alot of the time young boys ripping girls off about their apples

also big superstars in hollywood like pamela anderson and co dont help the boob job much, yet nothing is said about that and it gets blame on porn?

i have whacking off to porn for many years and im still hard as rock so i highly doubt it stuff up your weener

also wtf is wrong with a boob job, if you feel you want bigger breasts and will be more confident, then get it done

personally i like em small and perky but ppl must do what they like and what makes them feel happy

o btw im addicted a porno

wow u must see after a porno i go and rape random old ladies, i have also committed murder and i am also now turning to animal sex because my addition is getting out hand

DAMN U PORNO FOR RUINING MY LIFE

Well I hope you weren't offering that article as proof of anything.

It's basically the opinion of some expert's, without any science or research to back it up.

Porn is such an easy target for people who enjoy a good bandwagon ride.
We all have so much judeo/christian baggage about sex and we all assume porn is bad without really knowing or even thinking about why its bad because thats what we've been told since we knew what it was.

Psychologist's and psychiatrists are also just people with bias's. Basically what they seem to be saying is that porn is bad cos it makes you **** and ****ing is bad, which is basically what the sexually repressed crypto-fascists have been saying since day one.
These are the same people who made up the stories about hairy palms and going blind.

The other reason porn is such an easy target is because the experts who may think porn is harmless have to live and work in communities where the anti-spank sexual-fascists have done there work well over the centuries (IOW everywhere).

Yeah, we've all heard it - if science doesn't say so then it isn't so... and if science doesn't bother to do real research?

The Guardian

Concern that French children's attitude to sex is being warped by early exposure to hardcore pornography was exacerbated yesterday when eight adolescent boys were placed under formal judicial investigation for the gang rape of a 15-year-old classmate.

Details of the alleged crime, in a relatively upmarket district of France's second city, Lyons, emerged the day after the publication of a survey estimating that nearly half of France's children had seen an adults-only sex film by the time they were 11.

Claude Rozier, the school doctor who headed the government-sponsored survey, said: "Hardcore porn has become the principal vehicle for quite young children's understanding of everything to do with love and sexuality, sometimes their only point of reference."

It found that 89.6% of boys aged 16 or 17 had seen one or more porn films, For girls, the figure was 81.1%.

Most of the teenagers questioned said they watched pornography "to find out about sex", and nearly 40% said the films - almost invariably watched at home or at friends' houses while parents were out or asleep - had taught them something useful.

Benoît Felix, who runs an Aids hotline for teenagers in the Paris area, described the situation as "worrying in the extreme".

In the past five years, he said, it had become "patently obvious" that the majority of questions adolescents asked the hotline's staff were inspired by the pornography they were watching.

"They want to talk about sodomy, threesomes, group sex, gang rape, bondage," he said. "The language they use is that of the porn world; the relationship between sex and desire no longer exists.

"Teenagers' first sexual experiences are difficult enough at the best of times, but if porn films are the model things get a lot more complicated."

The eight boys detained in Lyons, aged 14 and 15, are part of a group of 11 who allegedly took it in turns on a Saturday afternoon several weeks ago to rape one of their classmates in an alley not far from their school, the College Georges Clemenceau.

Traumatized, the unidentified girl did not tell the school's pastoral assistant for more than a month.

"One boy has confessed," a Lyons public prosecutor, Robert Esch, said yesterday. "The rest still insist the girl was willing and the sex was fully consensual.

"It's quite extraordinary. Clearly, in their minds, it's as if what happened was some kind of virtual game. They seem to have no idea of the gravity of the acts they are accused of."

Michela Marzano, a philosopher and psychologist, said it was becoming increasingly difficult not to relate French children's increasing exposure to pornography to the recent surge in cases of teenage collective rape.

"Pornography is supposed to be reality, it imposes a norm that will lead many young consumers to construct a world where sexual relations are those of these films," she said.

"When they discover the real world, some of them will inevitably be disappointed and decide to stick with porn. Some will accept reality. And some will refuse the real and react in the way pornography has taught them: with sexual violence.

"Porn does not recognize that the other person might have a different urge to yours."

The French broadcasting standards authority, CSA, says 27% of video cassettes hired in France are porn films.

The police say that if adolescents cannot persuade an older friend or relative, or a videostore owner, to rent them an adult movie, automated "hole in the wall" video dispensers provide an easy option.

But researchers say that teenagers' primary source of pornography remains the television. The pay-TV channel Canal Plus broadcasts a porn film every Saturday night; most of France's cable television film channels show at least one uncensored hardcore film every evening after midnight; one, XXL, carries nothing but adult movies.

Experts say that parental control devices, most of which feature a code that is supposed to deny children access to certain channels, are rarely effective because they involve complex programming procedures which teenagers understand far better than their parents.

:D

Why can't people bear to allow critique of the culture of pornography without going completely berserk? Why can't we dialogue about how and why pornography has negative impacts on societies and how and why it's related to other forms of oppression? Pornography is just as subject to criticism as all other media...

Yeah, we've all heard it - if science doesn't say so then it isn't so... and if science doesn't bother to do real research?

No, if there is no evidence then you actually are just dealing with hypothesis. IOW someones opinion. Only dumb **** fascists make decisions that affect other peoples lives and right to decide based on someones opinion.
