It always bothers me when I see people making statements that liken todays moral benchmarks with those of yesteryear. That is like saying the old times had it right and we should revert back to then. Problem in the people making these comparisons nver take the negatives of the old days into account, like discrimination based on sex for instance. And like Wiz points out, how far back do you need to look for your moral benchmark.
Morality, like time, is a self imposed set of rules that are as fluid and dynamic as civilisation itself. Gone are the days where it was illegal for woman to hold down a job or even be scorned if they read a book, but those were moral benchmarks back then. We say we need to protect our kids against porn, but has anyone ever asked the question "What exactly are we protecting them from?" I agree fundamentally it feels wrong, but I still dont know why it is wrong. Is the way I feel about it due to the fact that it was drilled into my head as a kid that it was bad by society? Surely educating them about it is more effective that making it this dirty monster?
Porn aside I feel we need to be looking forward for our moral standards, as looking back is a little naive, since we have progressed from there. The physiological and mental development of humans is faster now that it has ever been before, couple that with the technological and logistical advancement we have made and you have a race that has extended its effective society age by at least 10 years from the days by which you are making moral comparison to. (Ok, thats sounds confusing, what I am saying is that a child of 10 years old now is more conscious of its environment that a 20 year old was 50+ years ago.)

So because the past had problems, you should ignore the fact that the future could have new different problems caused by what the flavour of today is? To say that we have only advanced is laughable when you look at (for example) the crime we live with in SA. The same logic can be applied to our country. Blacks are free today - they were never in the past - so does that mean our government is brilliant and needs a pat on the back for the current status quo? Maybe you think like that.
Do you think our government is doing a bad job and should go back to how it was rather?

believe me its not that my fiancee does not enjoy sex, its just most females dont enjoy sex every second day like men do
brad the government is not doing a bad job man, its just certain things are going wrong they are doing nothing about it
i remember under the old government we lost our house because interest rates where 28%, thats a far cry from today's interest rate

Maybe South Africa isn't the 'real world'? Have you considered how many of those studies were conducted in a poorer more violence prone society?It can be fantastic in a relationship... especially when you make your own private...

Some good points here and I'd have to agree with w1z4rd and killa. People always seem to say that the previous civilisations had more morals than us, but that's an outright lie. If you go back in history and do some searching, you will find that those people may have even been as worse, or even worse off than what we are today. Porn, like anything else has been here for ages. It's nothing new and it is very much natural. Kids will always find something to keep themselves busy with or something to get attention. If not porn, it could be anything else.

porno is not bad and does not lead to anything more than spicing up your sex life
wizard you will find alot of women who want it all the time, but its very rare after 5 years of living together and being engaged that they will still want it all the time
i have so many friends and whenever we get drunk which is once a week we bitch about it haha
when u first meet a chick and start dating u screw everytime u see each other but then as the relationship matures that falls away
of course u get your nypho's but most of the time they dont like being with one person for a long period of time
i hear what your saying though because i have a friend who turns his chick down way more than he should and i wanna slap him when he tells me that because i would love to have to turn my chick down all the time

all those teenage years with the scope (those stars just don't cut it anymore hey )? But as for the fiancee not enjoying sex - what's new, men and women are different - that's true. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like sex ... or wouldn't appreciate the attention daily... What I am saying is that just like many women don't want that kind of attention daily, so many don't like that attention being diverted - your wife is either hiding that from you or is pretty unique in that way. But seriously, we need to think about what she wants too - that's where obsession with porn doesn't do us any favours imo.Oh, I wasn't saying good or bad on the government, I was saying the problems of the past are not really helpful in trying improve the current situation, unless there is a lesson to be learned... the potential problems of the future must be dealt with on their own merit... at least give it a thought...

Good and bad.. Good as in.. peace and tranquility and a simple life style. A lot of greek philosophers would argue that the way to happiness is through simplicity.
Bad as in.. you have no social life, and you get to experience a lot less of the world.. depending on your current ambitions this is not always great. I still have too much to do till I consider returning back to the farms, so its not an option for me at the moment.

Problem is there you are limiting yourself to SA. Belive it or not, there are countries that exist with low crome rates. Africa is a different kettle of fish altogether.
There are 2 ways to run a civilisation history has shown us. The iron fist approach and the democratic approach. Neither actually work. This is because of advancement. Something that fitted at the time, will no longer fit 50 years down the road. The iron fist approach disregards civil liberties, and aims for the greater good. The democratic approach places focus on the individual. After the rise of every great nation is the inevitable fall of it. The modes of rule are cyclic, and you can verify this historically.
I know I am going to get flamed for this but what the heck. The problem with Africa is that we took a race of people, thrust them 100 years into the future, slapped chains on them and only gave them a glimpse of what it could be like. Then we took the chains off and handed the country over. Throw a kid in a candy store and what do you have... a sick kid. Blacks in the states have had there freedom for almost a hundred years now, and they still reference it and use it as a bargeining chip to date. The African crisis will never be resolved in our lifetime. And since they are handing Africa over to the Chinese piece by piece, I think you will find in 50 years another oppressor will be in play. That aside, you now have a lot of pissed off people running around who are being commended for suppressing their hatred and not having a civil war. These days they call it something more politically correct... crime.
