How is port Elizabeth compared to durban as a city for local tourism, job prospects and holidays? Is it established or more upcoming and still finding its feet? I just went on Google earth and it seems like Polokwane on the coast. As in not much is going on

Salaries are lower, we literally have crap in our water, potholes and paint on the roads non-existant.
Beaches are great, people are fine, you get used to the wind and companies want to leave for greener pastures due to service delivery issues at times.
PLZ is fine, and we enjoy living here. Houses are well-priced, not much entertainment in terms of live music and concerts. Schools are good too.

You can have Durban. That place is a hole.

I thought the service issues would be gone since i saw last year politicians were fighting for control of the city. I personally want to visit. I wasn't expecting Durban 2 but something unique in its own way. I know of the economic situation in the province

Yeah then swing by. Lots of lovely beaches other than the usual suspects in Summerstrand (which has its own issues if you're walking around at night).
Very nice malls. Other places like Grass Roof, Addo Elephant Park, very good mountain bike trails if you're into that sort of thing as well as walking trails.
I'd still take PLZ over the other cities. George, for me, would be the next best place to live.

Summerstrand Neighborhood Watch and other community groups are making a huge difference in terms of safety. However, I'd definitely recommend against living there if you don't need to. Summerstrand is completely taken over by students and taxis and in my opinion, one of the unsafest (wealthy) areas as a result. Grew up in Summerstrand PE and now live in East London. I feel a million times safer here than when I'm in PE.There was some positive change when Athol Trollip was running the show, but now the political situation is a mess and service delivery close to nonexistent.

PE and surrounds have a lot to offer in its own way. Maybe give an idea of what you are looking to do here and us locals can tell you if it is worth it or not

Taxis are everywhere. Cockroaches. How were things improving under Athol Trollip

Im more focued on the city rather than the surrounds. I want to explore and see how it is. As long as its not the same as polokwane and has some activity going on. I know its not Durban or JHB but at least its own vibe nyana

Born there and a lot of family still live there (most of whom I avoid).
Decent for a holiday. Nice weather and beaches (just watch your back a bit, its like anywhere in SA). Quite a bit to do with malls, game parks, etc.

I'm not sure I would like to live there though. There are good schools but there doesn't seem to be too many good opportunities and most young and educated emigrate to CT or overseas. Those that stick around tend to become riff-raff. Government is currently a mess and so is the water situation. There are glimmers of hope in the private sector but I don't have optimism for the place as it will likely go the way as the rest of Africa. A mess.

I grew up there too and would definitely not live there :)

Rates immediately went up as a start. Things were getting done, but because the DA p1ssed away our votes by going in to a coalition with the EFF, they got voted out and it went downhill thereafter.
The current mayor has absolutely no clue what's going on.

It's boring isn't it
It depends on what you are after.

Some of the best scuba diving is available in PE. Great reefs and lots of wrecks, lots of raggys. And it's the dolphin capital of the world. A lot of nature in the area and surrounds.
If you want action, join the NSRI as a volunteer.
