Hi Guys,

My CellC contract ends next month and I would like to port to MTN. How easy is this to do? I read somewhere the porting has to happen on the last day of your old contract. Is this true? Also, when would the best time be to cancel my CellC contract? You have to give them a month’s notice, so I guess I have to let them know before the end of this month.

Thanx in advance

Well as far as I know. You make a cancelation for a moths notice with them. Then when that is through you can let MTN know you would like to port and they sort everything out for you. you have to fill in a few papers. You can port in your last month of contract eg. if you are serving your last month (month 24) then you are coll to go without any cancelation fees. But I would advise you to speak to your provider about it and make sure.

Tried to do the same thing recently... all I can say is forget about the number, walk away. Rather spend your time notifying people of your new number and changing your details at the bank etc.

Cell C are the biggest bunch of a-holes you are likely to ever have to deal with. When I tried to port they couldn't cos their system was down, I spent the entire day following up calls while they failed to return one of my 6 or 7 calls after stating emphatically that they would, when I finally got through to someone the following day I was told it was too late and that the number had been recycled.

The bottom line is that they simply are not able to do the job. Zero competency, zero effort, zero results... no matter how much they may want to - they just can't do it.

Frankly I hope that the rumours of their going belly up are true and that it happens sooner rather than later, sounds cruel right? What about all those people that will lose their jobs? ...THEY CANT DO THEIR JOBS TO BEGIN WITH!

Better to be cut loose and find something you can do IMO.

@SlinkyMike - Thanx for the info. I like my number, got to pick it myself at the beginning of CellC, but if it's that much of a hassle I rather just dump the number and get a new one.

Don't give a month's notice to Cell C, by 'cancelling' your contract with them you're ideally cancelling your number (which you don't want to do), a week before your contract expires you go to MTN sign the new contract and what not and say you're porting, they do the rest and organise with Cell C :)

First change your contract to prepaid on Cell C. This makes the porting process much easier as MTN does not have to get permission from Cell C to port a prepaid number, or it is easier, not sure.
Only make the changes on or after your contract expiry (maturation) date, else they will nail you with cancellation fees.

EDIT: It may be better to change to prepaid exactly on the expiry date, else your contract goes onto month-to-month where you would would pay full subscription for a month in advance.

Well my GF tried to port from MTN contract to prepaid and was told she cant...lol
How does that work? She then had to port to virgin or who ever and then after two months she could port to MTN pre paid. How doff is that?

Yea I know we talking about Cell C here but its intresting anyway...

Ok, I will try the Contract-to-prepaid option first. How is this done? Do I phone the call centre to just go into a shop and sign a form or something?

Can I reverse porting?
