Porting to a promotional data SIM? [solved]

This morning I sent another MyBroadband Forum personal message to Cell_C enquiring about the support email I sent. They called me back a little while ago and it seems they may be able to help.

I have since also received an email telling me what I need to do, but I was not sure about some of the details. What it basically comes down to is that I need to buy the Cell C promotional data sim and then email the sim number and my cell number to technical support and they will process the number port on the back end.

I know already from my experience last Friday that it is not possible through the Cell C in store web application, but I guess the technical support guys can perform these changes directly on their database.

As soon as I know more, I will report back on this forum.

cool.....does that mean all of us who have to do this will have to contact the cell c rep.....cause all the Cell C stores I had been to said its not possible
cant wait to do this ......

I hope not.

I will probably buy a data promotion SIM on Sunday, as I am a bit busy the next few days. Will then try to get the number ported starting Monday. Maybe I should actually wait until closer to Thursday (2 December), since having it activated so late in November means there will not be enough time left in the month to use much of the data bundle.

If the number port fails, I would have already spent the money on the data promotion SIM, so I guess I would have to change my cell number then.

I purchased a 24Gb Data Promotion Sim yesterday afternoon. I emailed the Cell C technical person (I dealt with before) this morning with the new SIM sumber and my cell phone number. Now I guess I have to wait and see if they can get the number port done as they said they could do previously.

Prorting number to data-sim after activation/usage ?

@Cell_C, would it be possible to port a number to a pre-paid data-sim, after it have been activated/used ?

Scenario eg. : Could I go buy a data-sim now and start using it for data only and port my current number to it in 2 months time when my contract, with a different carrier, expires ?

Hi chopsuey,

As you saw there are a number of people that want to purchase a pre-paid data-sim and port their cell number. Thus far it has not been established that this is indeed possible, but Cell C is being helpful and things are looking promising.

I have already purchased a data sim and have requested the port to be performed, so hopefully it wont be long until we have an answer.

As for porting a number only two months after the activation, I wouldn't know. I guess it would depend on the database design of the Cell C back-end systems, meaning that I am not sure whether the data deal info is linked to the SIM serial number of the phone number. If it is linked to the SIM Serial number you may have a good chance, but if linked to the phone number, Cell C may not want to budge. It probably isn't good business practise to have database administrators fiddling in the database to resolve non-standard customer requests.

Well, that's just my two cents.

gadnex

We are all eagerly waiting to hear if you are successful.

I sent another email this morning to [email protected] as per Cell_C's request. This time I requested a delivery and read receipt in Outlook. I actually received a read receipt a bit more than 30 minutes ago, so at least it seems they received the email and opened it.

Yip, I saw the posts, but somehow I got the idea it was possible. :o

I also raised this issue with @CellC on Twitter and seems it's possible ...?

@CellC, is it possible to port my cell no. from another network to the #CellC 5GB/sim-only/once-off-payment product ?

CellC Cell C South Africa

@jpmaraisza you may port your number, then we would do a number change upon activation. Visit your nearest franchise for more details.

Well, that's just my two cents.

Thanx man, with current exchange rates R 0.02 arn't that bad ;)

I cannot believe we don't have a solid answer on this topic yet. Cell_C can't you give us all something definitive?

Hi everyone,

I am happy to report that this morning my old Vodacom cell number was successfully ported to my 24Gb prepaid Cell C promtional data SIM.

It wasn't a simple or painless experience, but it is possible. I was really impressed with the customer service experience in general, because this was a non-standard request on my part and they could have just said it is not possible, but they tried to help and eventually they figured out how to do it.

The store that helped me was Cell C in East Gate, so they should know now how to do it.

Gadnex

Huzzah, now all I need to do is shlep all the way to east gate!

Can anyone confirm whether this procedure will work with a promotional data SIM?

The instructions explicitly state not to open the package, so presumably if you are already using your data bundles it will require visiting a store, as gadnex did.

Hi everyone,

Cool, have you used/activated the sim before your number got ported ?

The issue is that my Vodacom contract only expires @ the end of Jan 2011 and I'm concerned that the data-promo will end before then.

There is no problem porting before your Vodacom contract is up. They will assign your Vodacom SIM a new number and continue billing you as per normal. Just remember to give notice on your Vodacom number at the beginning of your last month on contract.

Thanx, was not aware that it could be done.

Already did this and got an SMS conformation.

Has more than one person been successfull in doing this? I have yet to receive a reply from [email protected]

Tried my luck on Friday.

Send the following eMail to [email protected] :

Hi

I'm being told by my local CellC franchise, Somerset Mall, that it is
not possible to port my current Vodacom number to an Pre-Paid "data"
sim. They said is is only possible if I take the sim on contract.

This is in conflict that It have been said by @CellC ( to me
@jpmaraisza) on Twitter and at least one customer from an online forum
that have had this done.

If it is indeed possible, could you please give me a reference / TelNo
that the CellC store can phone to confirm that "Porting Number to
Pre-Paid data sim" is possible.

PS: I'm on my way to my local mall/CellC franchise to see if this
could be sorted out, so a swift response would be appreciated.

Thanx

Hi

Kindly note, it is possible to port your pre-paid Vodacom sim to Cell C
data sim.

Cell C

The reply was a bit ambiguous, but enough "proof" for the CellC sales person to start phoning around.

After about an hour on the phone, somebody confirmed that it is possible, but when it was tried on the in-store system, it failed.

The store told me they would phone me back ,so I left. An hour or two later CellC sales person phoned me and I was told it could only be done by one (?) person that would only be available on Monday.

So lets see what happens next week. I'll give some feedback ... (PS, I would probably only be able to visit the shop towards the end of the week)
