Hi all

I'm on MTN prepaid & want to port to VC prepaid. Bought SIM card from store, RICA'd, etc, didn't activate new SIM. Sent portme SMS with SIM card number and got a message back saying port request successful, will happen that evening - which it never did.

When I got around to phoning VC they say that because my 082 number had previously been on a VC contract (many years ago), that they cannot port back to VC??

Surely that can't be right?

Update:

Two days later I went to a VC shop. They looked on their system and could see there was a port request, but were unable to see why it didn't go through.

This time they did the port request in store, I got an SMS with a PIN number, registered the new SIM on their system and I got another SMS saying port is successful and would occur that night.

Next morning and I'm still on MTN? I've never had this much trouble trying to port IN before...

You seem to like being screwed dry from behind. Why not move to Telkom?

Getting hold of the porting dept is a hit & miss affair...the number is often engaged or doesn't connect, and the person who answers doesn't always understand what's going on. Finally got through to a guy called Philemon who figured it out.

Went back to the VC store and he talked the assistant through the process. You have to first request your number be archived onto the new system - this was done by emailing [email protected] - apparently they have a turnaround time of 24 - 48 hrs. Once they have confirmed this is done my number can then be ported into VC.
That's useful info, thanks for sharing.

Managed to break into VC finally - once number was archived port went through.

Problem now is that I cannot send or receive SMSs - this is not a porting issue (confirmed by porting dept this morning), but rather due to no services being loaded on my profile (see screenshot below)...

It's supposed to have loads of other things including SMS-MO and SMS-MT which is possibly why no SMSs are working.

My problem is trying to explain this to 082111 and not lose my **** in the process...they first blame the port, then want to check message centre numbers (all fine, already checked), and can't seem to understand what needs to be done.

Anyone have advice (besides not having ported in the first place)?

Just for comparison I ported to Telkom Mobile and it was magic. Was a 5 minute conversation with someone at a Telkom store.

Update just to finish and close off this post:

It took around two weeks of phoning everyday to finally be able to receive SMS's after porting. Every time I phoned there was another explanation for why it wasn't working from the start. It is painfully clear that the people at 082111 help desk do not know what is going on - it's in fact a total joke, which is less funny when you need an OTP to access your bank account.

The porting help desk is more knowledgable, but often say they cannot help unless it's directly related to the port. The dealer's are just as ****'d as the customer - waiting in store for them to get someone on the phone who knew what was going on took ages.

Useful resources:
- email [email protected] about porting issues, at least they give you a reference number immediately
- phone 0821299326 porting department, if you can ask for Philemon (by far most knowledgable guy I spoke to)
- ask anyone who you speak to to log a report for a technician to review

Lastly, think before you port...

Do you actually enjoy Telkom Mobile?
Yes, its working well.

I have good signal at my house so used it as my home internet connection for a year. I have fibre now.
Haven't regretted migrating my cellphone number to them either. I'm on prepaid so will move the second its bad.
