Possible ADSL issues in Plettenberg bay

I have been experiencing terrible ADSL performance since Tuesday 11 Dec 2012.

The ADSL service on the DSLAM in Plettenberg bay to which i connect to is unusable during business hours. I have reported to my ISP numerous times yet Telkom will not confirm what the issue is. Bottom line, the ADSL works as expected after business hours (peak) but is unusable during the peak times.

I am not sure why they cannot correctly diagnose the issue but i am confident that there is network congestion.

The final straw was that they said they tested congestion and all seems clear ( they tested today on an off peak time ).

Can anyone else confirm similar issues ?

Yes I can confirm 100% that there are major ADSL issues in Plett. I don't know for sure the total number of DSLAMs in the main exchange but it appears there is congestion on at least two of them.

Area's such as Whale Rock, Keurbooms, Wittedrift etc seem unaffected as they are on their own IMAX's

You can expect latency of over 1000ms during congested periods. This problem has been ongoing for the last 4-5days and I don't think will be resolved anytime soon...that is until the holiday makers leave :-)

Plett ADSL is totally screwed now...router syncing and connected to PPPOE, no traffic flowing :-(

Hi guys - sorry to hijack a thread, but it seems relevant:) I'm moving to Plett at the end of August - I'm currently on a 10mbps ADSL line, and I'd be hoping for the same (or a 4mbps line if Telkom are going to be punks). My new place is on Boston Light (Robberg Ridge is the area, I believe).

Any input on whether the latency issues have improved? What are the line speeds like? Any issues with MTN/Vodacom 3G or 8ta's network? Thanks so much:)

Telkom 8ta has no coverage in the plettenbergbay area. They piggyback voice and data on MTN so if you are hoping to use telkom data, you can forget it. Voice contact works fine but data has to be"all network data".

Well this is an extremely necro'd thread, but an update after living there for nearly two years:

- VDSL is limited to Goose Valley estate and (I kid you not) Kwanokothula. Kwano has as many as two VDSL users, so clearly Telkom made the right choice to ignore the wealth concentration in Whale Rock Ridge and focus on Kwano.

- Telkom were deploying a new exchange on Longships in April, 2014, but decided against it because "FTTH is coming and now we have fibre already laid down Longships". Over a year later and we still don't have FTTH.

- No 8ta, no iBurst, no WiMAX, no LTE on MTN or Vodacom, no fibre from MTN, diddly squat.

- Vodacom will be putting fibre into Whale Rock in 2016, and if you're in the vicinity they will probably lay fibre to you at their expense. They have a massive infrastructure spend for fibre deployments, and they're looking to game Telkom at that.

- The Computer Shop in Plett (the one by Beares) has a massive fibre pipe that they can scale up to like 1.5gbps. If you want proper high speed right now they are your best bet. For 10mbps down, 2mbps up, we pay R1500/month. Installation is R3500 afair. Speeds are excellent, uncontested, unshaped, low latency. You need line of sight to one of their high sites on the hill or at Whale Rock, so YMMV if you have coverage. I can confirm that they don't have downtime when Eskom cuts the power, if you can power the equipment they install you will have Internet access during loadshedding. If you are a demanding Internet user then speak to Wesley at The Computer Shop and tell him Riccardo recommended you talk to him. He will hook you up.

tl;dr - wireless from The Computer Shop if you want high speed now, else wait for Vodacom and others to have FTTH in the area starting from next year.

It looks like there are at least 3 providers who are going to offer FTTH in Plettenberg Bay very soon. One will start this year. The future is FTTH, everything else fails in comparison.

EDIT: Tech friends say there are also 4X FTTH enabled MSAN's going in the main residential areas, slabs, fiber backbone cable and power are in already.

Well this seems to have become my annual "State of Broadband in Plett" thread, since it comes up in Google and seems to be trafficked.

Since the last year there are only a few updates:

- MTN now has LTE coverage pretty much all over town, and it's fast. I use Afrihost for my mobile data, and it works extremely well.
- The Computer Shop has been pretty solid and reliable. Had one hiccup where someone else on the tower was using the same channel as we were, which made our connection extremely unstable, but it was fixed very quickly. Latency is low, speed is reliable, but it's still considerably expensive (uncapped ADSL prices).
- Despite what eddief1 and myself have been told (separately by various people) there is still no FTTH anywhere in Plett. Nothing from MTN, Vodacom, Telkom, Vumatel, or MetroFibre. I don't hold out much hope for this to change anytime soon, fibre roll outs have been crazy slow.

What about Telkom VDSL? Is it not better than ADSL in Plett or is it also congested?

The ADSL exchanges are poorly positioned, and with the number of hills you're more likely to be placed far from an exchange than not. Congestion isn't an issue, because there aren't that many fixed-line broadband clients.

nearly half of plett has VDSL http://openserve.co.za/interest-register/location , might wanna contact telkom to be sure.

No VDSL where I live. More on that below.

An update on the VDSL situation since my epic Twitter rant at Telkom a few years ago: they finally gave up on their fibre-from-Longships idea, and put an exchange down on Longships. That has provided VDSL services to lower Plett, which is great.

However, it doesn't provide VDSL access to the parts of town where the offices, retail shops, and large swathes of the population are (including me!) So here's hoping that changes in future, but frankly I think my next move will be from The Computer Shop's wireless -> fibre service to fibre to my house. When it's available. In ten years.

There is already fibre running down longships, PM me your location as there is a lot more fibre in Plett than you are aware of and not just openserv fibre.

VDSL is in longships yes, but even though they have shortened the local loop there is still serious problems with degraded copper infrastructure.

Hi All!

I see this thread hasn't been used in a while but just trying my luck.

Moving to Plett soon, so was wondering if anyone has updates on Fibre in Plett or how good the DSL is?

Thanks:)
