Hi all,

Okay, so i'm trying to understand this...

My GF wanted to buy herself a power bank and get one for her father.
She asked me for advice and basically we sat on TakeAlot and I explained (because I know that at least) the "mAh" (power) for the power banks.
My mentality is, the more mAh, the better - but then she noticed that some are HIGH and cost LESS than those that are LOW but they cost MORE.
It stumped me to be honest because I didn't know quite how to answer her.
Anyways, she apparently spoke to her brother and he gave her all the 'best' advice and she bought one of the Romoss makes for R311. http://www.takealot.com/romoss-polymos-10-power-bank-10000mah/PLID38437302

Now, I've hinted at getting one, but before I go and get one or she buys me one, can someone please explain the power banks to me, why some are so expensive but offer low mAh and others are cheap but offer high mAh.

I really want to fully understand these units.
 
I don't think it really matter much tbh.

They're all going to be chinese stuff anyway. I've seen the one type with like 3 different brand names on it now.

That said recently I've been seeing some 20k mah ones when previously it was mostly 2k units.
 
You get what you pay for. But then again I've used a generic named battery for twice as long as an original Nokia. Some generics are also just debranded originals in order to capture market share. So you may pay a lot and get crap or pay less and get something good. But since it's so inconsistent I'll rather go with the cheap stuff.
 
Yep, the mAh capacity of the power bank directly correponds to the amount of energy the battery can provide.
That said, some cheap (i.e. less than 10 dollar) power banks I've seem have simply inflated their mAh capacity, but for the higher price you're paying and the fact it's on takealot I doubt it'll be an inflated value. Also quality of power banks vary greatly and this is important internally with the battery charging circuit (to charge the power bank's Lithium Polymer battery), and the boost converter circuit (to convert the 3.7V battery voltage to 5V as required by USB) - low quality ones may not charge the battery "correctly" as lithium polymer batteries are very specific with charging for maximum life, leading to reduced battery life of the power bank over time, and unstable output (potentially damaging to devices), however once again you should be fine with anything on takealot. Just looking in Incredible Connection a few weeks ago at power banks from several reputable but different brands, I saw, when classed by the same mAh capacity (I believe it was 9000mAh), the prices varied from R500 to R800 - this goes to show how companies really vary their pricing for the same thing, so it's not that surprising that you found the different prices. I guess it's because they hope the majority of consumers won't understand mAh capacities and by charging a higher price (and snazzy packaging ;)), even if they lose a few sales from some customers comparing capacities, the total sales figure is greater.

Romoss Sailing series have genuine Samsung cells in them so isn't some no name brand that doesn't hold a charge or has a limited lifespan. :) bought four Sailing 2s so far.

Bought 2 as well, but not for myself. Works well and good build quality.
 
I got a random power bank from a Windhoek promo at Oppi this year and it seems to work quite well. For me it will just be used as an extra source of power when I'm doing something that makes it difficult to keep my phone charged. Its not an everyday item for me.
 
Also just bought an Adata PT100 10KmAh at R252 from Loot. Will check it out and see how it goes. I previously had a chinese power bank bought from a Paki stall. Had it for a year before it packed up. It was 7200mAh and I got it for R300. The power banks in the cell shops are overpriced IMHO. CellularCity had a Muvit 6k for R250 but come on 6k or 10k its a no brainer.
 
Got myself a 4Ah with a solar charger for R249 from Takealot less a R100 voucher.

I got myself one of those Rosmoss powerbanks,13 000mah. They claim to have a Samsung battery cell in them. So far everything seems good. Bought it in Feb. Efficiency, I would say around 80%.

The main difference in price for the same mah is the brand and quality of the product.
 
I have both the Adata 10,000mah and the Rosmoss 5200mah. The ADATA gives my Xperia E4(2300mah) about 4 charges, the Romoss about 2. Both very good Powerbanks.
 
It is a bit bigger than the one my GF purchased but I didn't mind spending a bit more to have 'more' power. It's about the same size as my GF's to be honest.

I have an old HP with a 6 cell battery
10.8V
4.0 AHr

is that 4000 mAh?
