Power rationing until July

Eskom

After June all old age power stations will have a facelift
and appear like new. In addition solar geysers will be available in all shops.
Question why we use geysers at all?. I have not seen a single one in Germany don't know
of other places, maybe there are some. If they switch on
the water it becomes instant hot using around 4 to 8KW
So a shower might take 5 to 10 minutes at 4 or 8KW
Maybe I'm wrong but if you don't use hot water you are not using
Electricity and there is no Geyser which is switching on or off automatically.

The short version:

Buy a generator.

But interesting that say 2010... think they are just saying that to please FIFA... expect it to 2012

"Rationing" has 2 aspects (as I heard it on radio)
-reducing the consumption by e.g. 20%
-lower prices if one uses less than the benchmarks and higher prices if one uses more

IMO, iro of residential properties they would have to work in terms of average usage and then apply general usage bands with price differentiation, and not the actual consumption.

Let's assume your neighbor used 1000kWh a month, you used 200kWh. If the benchmark is actual consumption, the he would get 800kWh at standard price, and you would have to pay the penalty tariff for anything over 160kWh. I think that this would be unfair price discrmination.

I also think that neither Eskom nor municipalities would have the staff to administer a houshold centered system.

It would not surprise me if they would say the 50kWh free Electricity (in Cape Town) is the average usage and that penalties apply if one consumes more. One more way to increase revenue.

What about when winter hits? Surely there'll be increased power usage then?

They should subsidize solar geysers so that it costs about the normal price of a normal geyser.

Instead of building Power plants they should look at wind farms which is cheaper and quicker to build and the western cape would be suited for this. (windy)

Solar panels cost an arm and a leg but I was reading somewhere that there is new technology that make solar panels cheaper to generate electricity than coal. I think it's called nanosolar. Maybe setting up solar plants would then be cost effective and much quicker than building power plants.

Hows about certian people stop their illegal use of electricity and start paying for what they use? Would that help? Oh no, I forgot, we as tax payers already pay for them...how stupid of me..

If these retards just put in one percent of the effort they put into bull*****ting into working and thinking we would not have problems now.

But not to worry, it is our brothers after all. They helped us during he struggle and of course for that we owe them. It's the fault of the previous regimes planning during oppression years that we are in this power mess. They only build and planned enough capacity for their own use. Now we used it all up and have a shortfall of 4000+

Sarcasm?

I can imagine us welcoming all the tourists in 2010. Umm. No you can't have a shower, a cold beer, lights at the stadium and don't drive after dark because none of the robots work. Hmm. I am sure that they will tell everyone back at home how great SA is  I swear that in South Africa we are our own worst enemies. All we had to do was keep things running and we would have coined it from 2010 and beyond. All the foreign tourists and their wonderful foreign currency...gone...

July = winter = heaters etc = htf they gonna supply power in winter when they dont have enough in summer, even if all the power stations are up and running.

Im over it.

Rationing is definitely less damaging to the economy if people do succeed in using 10% less electricity which will result in much less/no load shedding, is it not?

I love this ...

A problem that has been obvious for years now arrives and we have to accomodate Eskom/Government. No one apologises to the public, instead the public is blamed and told that we are using to much electricity and so will be punished, and now we will be punished if we in different ways over time ...

No one seems to accept responsiblity instead they just keep shifting the blame, and as I mentioned quickly hoist the problem on us,
What about incentives to cut down on power, perhaps a lower tariff under a certain amount, and once exceeded its normal charges and once excessive high costs,
What about subsidised Solar heating, Solar Geysers or just plain Solar Panels, or any viable alternative renewable energy source,
What about public education, educate people on good usage, offer plans or/and equipment that would help create a more effiecient system ...

None of the above, no Carrot all stick ... Oh wait I know why dont I go out and spend the money I have and buy a generator, and supplies, and then wait for my luverly hefty electricity bill ...

Bet we will be paying a little something extra on out bills to pay for the upgrading and building of power station ...

Ag, its only winter, its not like people will freeze to death. I wonder if you could lay charges of murder against Eskom or the Department of Minerals and Energy? Time to go buy a gas heater, me thinks. Good thing I have the money - its the poor that are going to suffer.

Furthermore, the reasons we were given for lack of capacity is summer maintenance. How the hell is July summer?

According to an interview on Cape Talk, the 'allowance' will be 1200kWh per household. There was talk of a band of 200kWh above that with what I take 'punitive tariffs'. Above that you may possibly get cut off, i.e. more than 1400kWh usage.

The question I have is, since 50kWh per month are free is that going to be cut off too, and with what justification? Are they going to connect you every 1st of the month (reconnection charge?) and cut you off two days later?

In another interview, the interviewee said that one can achieve 10% saving without really trying. Tough if you have been trying for last couple of years.

What I am missing in the article is Escom's plan to reduce their unplanned maintenance incidents of 7000+ MW. This is far more than what they would regain from power rationing. Why is there such a deathly silence about this?
