Has anyone ever tried an Ethernet over power line?

I've seen Billion offers a product like this that you plug into you wall power socket and another one in another room and it allows you to operate ethernet over the line @ 200Mbits

What's the furthest you can put the two components apart and do you think it will work from the house to a granny flat outside?

I've used the Netgear version at a client. It works well, the only caveat is that the plug points must be on the same circuit. If the granny flat is on a circuit separate from the house it won't work.

Pretty much what bekdik said. Use the netgear 85mbps ones. Also those mosquito repellant things that don't work that are supposed to turn your house into some sort of beacon that makes them go away is incompatibly with them. I had them work briefly over 2 db boards from house to cottage but then stopped working.
They are pretty simple, just plug and pray.
