Most of my friends went over to MTN ,due to vodacom's long waiting PPDB's.Vodacom is loosing alot of customers im sure of it.They must really get their act right.

It's official, they are no longer the leading network. They seem to be last with everything lately and credit cards don't count. :p
 
My birthday is coming closer and my mom ask me what i want, i told her she can buy me nice big data bundle from MTN for the holidays.
 
i still use vodacom contract but my data is no longer provided by them... they are loosing the race
 
Maybe they don't want to provide bungles any more. Maybe they are planning on reducing the rate to 50c/MB. (look on faces of Vodacom execs: :eek:)

I was a little bit disappointed [not surprised though] when Chris Ross reaffirmed Vodacom's commitment to bundles of data at the MyBroadband conference - I still think things would be much simpler for consumers of data without data bundles, and I don't think that data bundles actually help Vodacom or MTN plan network capacity|bandwidth usage in any specific location.

This started with sms bundles if I'm not mistaken. Now this is the interesting part. With everything you buy in bulk the price decreases gradually on any subsequent items. Like for instance 1 coke for R10, 2 for R18, 3 for R25, and so on. They can't decrease the price too much or they will end up selling it for under cost price and not make any profit. Now in this example assuming a coke costs R6 they make 66% or R4 profit for one, 50% or R6 for two, 39% or R7 for three. Now with Vodacom 1MB of data cost R2, R28 for 20MB or R1.40/MB, R88 for 75MB or R1.17/MB, R119 for 150MB or 79c/MB, R160 for 250MB or 64c/MB, R280 for 500MB or 56c/MB, R399 for 1024MB or 39c/MB. Who on earth can reduce prices by that much if they aren't overcharging in the first place? Makes one wonder how long they think they can maintain an outdated offer scheme.

Hey, maybe Vodacom already did this, via Virgin ;) . Although i still need to confirm whether i am paying only 50c p/MB . Getting HSDPA via Virgin using "Vodacom (Roaming)" network.......but most probably just a lapse in security somewhere eh?

on a 1 gig bundle yea. so say i take a gig bundle and only use 500meg? I then effetively pay 80c/meg.... thats a load off bs...


How about this... on 40c/meg voda makes a good proffit (say for argument sake 100%, it would be bad business if they added a lower proffit.) NOW that means they make 1000% proffit per meg at R2... even if they sell data at cost 40c, still means they make 500% proffit... that is milking the consumer

Good business is 40% average.
 
VOda aint a good business....

And even on 40% proffit on 40c/MB means they pay 28c/MB, proffit of R1.72/MB or still 400%odd proffit
 
What can the gurus suggest?

I have iBurst for normal internet connections and use it extensively in Gauteng, PE and Cape Town.

What options are there (apart from hot spots that do not occur where I go) to get connectivity for basic web browsing and email on pay-as-you-go type of service (PPDBs). It does not have to be fast but must work where there is cellphone coverage.

Or you could just use MTN prepaid ... seeing as they have PPDB's ;)

Or use Virgin Mobile prepaid @ just 50c a MB... although expect the possibility some other problems - see link in my sig for striking example ... you (8321) did say though that it doesn't need to be fast though... seeing as poor speed is probably the biggest complaint against VM.. not that VC is any better IMHO :p - whilst on GPRS.

Thanks very much for the info.

Before I drop into one of Vodacom's outlets, one more dumb question. I am going to need one of those red thingies for a PCMCIA slot or some other hardware to dial in with from my laptop. What are the options here (for PPDBs) and is there a second-hand market like with iBurst modems?
