Predictions for 2009

Well I hoping things will improve on this year... because all we got was a whole lot of hot air. I must say, I'm very reluctant... the more things change... the more they stay the same!!!

I thought 2008 was going to be the year for internet, but sadly not.

..my main prediction is that steve jobs will die....his funeral will draw more tears than Diana's as his whole cult sect will be with their mascot...but apple will find a way to bring him back to life..and he will be the first Apple branded cyborg (complete with the Apple logo on his head0...the world will worship him...and we will all eventually die when his built in nucleur power supply cave in triggering a thermal nucleur war...I'm always right about this stuff I tell you

I doubt Apple will release an iPhone with a keyboard - that would be taking a step in the wrong direction.

However some predictions on the Apple front.
iPhone will see landscape typing of emails and sms
MMS features will probably be bundled in new software release

Apple have slowed down on new products as has been made clear by them cancelling their participation in the MacWorld Expo.

Microsoft will probably launch their new Zune Phone which will might be the next big thing, although I doubt it when you consider the Google Phone or Android OS will start to gain momentum next year.

I see Google releasing some interesting products next year - We will more than likely start seeing a convergence of their current product and services into something more uniform, like iGoogle, but probably more substantial.

I think overall there will be a slow down in the IT sector as the economy either implodes or slowly begins to heal itself, however you will probably find a slight increase in Internet usage world wide.

Although I can guarentee next year is going to be a make or break year for a lot of entities as consumers are going to be seeking value and quality, over quanity and glitz.

I honestly have to shake my head when I read the comments people make every time lower prices are announced. Despite prices falling just about every single year since ADSL came to SA people continue to say that prices won't fall the following year. That's just silly. Welcome to reality. Prices WILL come down next year, as they have been over the last 5 years. Not only that, but it WILL come down a great deal. That's just the way it is, but I guess I'll see the same people whining about prices not coming down in 2010 next year.

I predict that I will be able to get ADSL in 2050 but the service from Telkom so poor then will make the speeds worthless and I will go back to using dailup.... Till I die... :-(

I agree Internet prices will come down, however I do not think they will be substantial, considering the current movement in the sector and economic outlook.

Internet prices will come down next year and I will buy my Lamborgini.... :D

Internet prices will appear to be cheaper at a fixed price momentarily as fuel and any other goods becomes more expensive. The Rand sliding even more. Communication companies' CEOs get bigger bonuses while more jobs being cut. The farmers will complain if the Rand strengthens because of exports. MTN will continue to fudge the numbers to make their products look better. All the prices will go up to leach from the potential tourists while they are here and create a temporary market, and then the newspapers will claim: many jobs losses after they all left. And we are stuck with the high prices. Eskom will try to add other kinds of taxes while still fighting over a table how to fix the problem in the first place.

Only thing I see positive is the WUGS growing so fast, nobody is going to bother with internet at all :D I hope they become so big we can become one big network. Like JaWUG and PtaWUG that became one.

Two companies will make a lot of money from the telecoms industry:
Altech & Dark Fiber Africa.

Neotel will finally sort out all outstanding shareholder issues, but not in time for a turn-around strategy on the consumer side, which growth will disappoint them. They will launch prepaid services Q3/Q4 and try very hard to get a full mobile license.

Local IP transit prices will drop and lot of new online hosted services will be available- though not to the consumer till Q4 or possibly Q1 2010 - enterprises will be aggressively targeted from Q2. We will see a lot of funny routing to ensure enterprises get cheap bandwidth to all the sparkling new data centers everybody is building.

Vodacom's offering will continue to expand and will start targeting SME's by Q3.
