Can anyone recommend a decent WISP in Pretoria East (Elarduspark / Rietvalleirand), preferably one which supports the use of Mikrotik equipment?

I was involved in a lengthy discussion with Level-7 Wireless, and after having scanned myself with my Mikrotik equipment for their tower and sending screenshots of the scans, I was told that they are very sure it will work as they even have another client in my complex. So after spending time and money installing my equipment myself, their tech comes out and tells me Mikrotik won't work and I'll have to spend R2k on one of their Ubiquiti dishes.

Call me cheap, but I'm a little loathed to spend R2k on equipment when I already have a kit perfectly capable of achieving the same.

For my own knowledge, why are these so incompatible and which hardware is more commonly used for broadband wireless? My existing hardware used to be used on the WUG and worked very well until the highsite near me went down.

Ubiquiti has it's own proprietary protocol (AirMax, etc) to improve throughput over longer links. Mikrotik has the same (NV2).

Typically, on a WUG we'd use a common protocol, such as 802.11a/b/g/n/ac in order to support as many types of clients as possible, at the expense of higher throughput (it's also easier to raise funding for a WUG site if anyone can connect to it).

Commercial WISPs don't have those considerations. They want the best throughput per site so they can fit as many paying customers on it as possible for the lowest capital outlay. Level-7 chose UBNT, other WISPs would have chosen Mikrotik NV2...

Nv2 is just so much better. We have a pile of Nanobridges and Powerbeams we don't know what to do with.

If in working order and price is good we might be interested? PM me info if your interested. Powerbeams preferably :)
