Pretoria vs Cape Town

If you're any way into outdoor activites, take into account the wind. The sea is also fkn cold.

I know. I'm just not sure about the extra responsibility. I'm so used completing my work in the last minute and just chilling at work, which at the same time isn't good because it stunts my career development.

I've also been wanting to move out of my current field yet this new job is still in the same field. I guess there's no harm in taking it and looking for something else later on.

Capetown is nice for a holiday I think. I don't know if I would want to live there permanently.
 
Houses are expensive here compared with Pretoria.

Lots to do here, marvellous countryside, wonderful beaches. Pinelands is ok, but windy in summer. Thornton a bit cheaper. Life is quite laid back compared with Jhb and Pretoria. One big plus is that the traffic is not nearly so bad. Try and get a short-term rental for 6 months while you look around. You might find City Bowl is more your taste, or like the country area around Durbanville. If you are Afrikaans, then you might look at Brackenfell or Stellenbosch.

Generally speaking, salaries here are not as high as Jhb/Pretoria
 
It's a 3 year contract. I'm sure that if I don't enjoy it I could always move back. I think that I'd regret more not taking it than taking it.

Thanks. I'm English. I have a friend in lansdowne that I can stay with temporarily, yeah I know it's not a great area but atleast I'll be with someone. The laid-back attitude is exactly what I want, just not sure the job itself is going to be as laid-back as my current one.
 
I moved from Pretoria to Cape Town in 2005. And (funny enough) also worked in Pinelands (for the big green monster but only on contract).

Several of my friends moved down as well - without thinking of going back ever.

So no - please don't move. We've got enough Pretoria people here already :-)

In all honesty I cannot think why anybody who have the opportunity to live in Cape Town don't do it. There are several people doing a weekly commute between Cape Town and Johannesburg/Pretoria just for the opportunity to live here on weekends. It is one of the reasons why the OR-Tambo/Cape Town air route is one of the busiest air routes in the world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World's_busiest_passenger_air_routes). Cape Town is that good.

That might be true, but most people don't factor in the following:
1) Lower fuel cost because everything is closer together. I fill up once a month. My family in Pretoria fill up more than once a week.
2) Lower insurance cost.
3) Lower going to the beach/holiday cost.
4) More personal time.
 
I've noticed a landslide opinion in favour of Cape Town.

Well. The women here are awesome. Don't get me wrong you do get bitches, but i bet its the same in PTA.

I love living in CT, lots of "secret" places in Cape Town that I have yet to discover since moving here in 2008. But its amazing :D

Also you have to do some wine tastings around the countryside :D
 
The city I know is definitely better. It's the job itself that I'm concerned about, I think. People and our comfort zones.
 
This decision is a no brainer. CT is by far the best city in the country to live in. No questions asked. No arguments. This is fact.

Hope you take the leap, you will not regret it.
 
I have lived in both well, more in Joburg than PTA and I would say CPT is very small and no potential, especially if you planning to start something yourself. Doesn't matter if the idea will work in CPT or not because in PTA/JHB, you have much more potential to get it up and running and the people here won't waste your time and give it to you straight.

But you know , every person is different, some love JHB, some love CPT - I now ignore the pointless fights between the 2. What YOU have to do is experience CPT for 2 weeks and YOU decide if its for YOU :) PM me if you want to discuss further :)

Being taken out of your comfort zone is one of the best things that can happen to you. It forces you to get out of the rut you're in, and often opens doors for you. Life is about learning and living to the full. Leaving everything you know behind may be scary, but dude see it as an adventure!
 
Thanks guys. I think that I'll take the leap. I'm looking for a new environment, new scenery and challenges. What's the worst that can happen? I'll just move back to Gauteng if things don't work out there. I already have a place here and if I can find an engineering job in CT of all places then I'm sure I'd be able to find one in Gauteng if I return.
