Hi maybe someone on here can help me as Internet Solutions seems to be incompetent.

I live in a complex where Internet Solutions created something called a Gated Service. They installed an ADSL line in each unit. You simply call them, have it activated and pay R400 per month for 384KBps 3GB Cap. They do however try and force you to buy their R1000 Planet ADSL modem, which I don't want to buy because I already own 2 ADSL Wireless Routers so buying another one is just silly.

Because I'm using my own router, they won't come out to set it up and I have to deal with their stupid telephone technicians. The 2 routers work fine on Telkom ADSL lines (I tested it yesterday again).

IS claims that there's only 5 settings that I need to change on the router that's already working on Telkom ADSL Lines:
a) username
b) password
c) VCI
d) VPI
e) DNS Servers

I have changed everything to the specifications they can give me. But, they can't even see my router trying to authenticate on their side. It doesn't get an IP address from them or anything. When I test the line using the router software, the router claims that the line is working fine, but as soon as it tries to create the PPPoE connection it fails. This happens on both routers.

Can you guys think of anything else that might possibly block it from authenticating? 'Cause right now it looks like the only solution is to buy their stupid Planet ADSL router for R1000 (which is not even wireless) and that's actually identical to my current router (just a different brand). They claim they only change the 5 settings mentioned above on the Planet ADSL router and then it works like a bomb, but they're not willing to go through my router's settings with me, 'cause it's not one they sold to me. And - because they wired the entire complex with their own ADSL cables, I'm not allowed to use Telkom ADSL. I have to go through them.

Any ideas?

It sounds like they're almost running a private phone network connected to a DSLAM inside your complex which then breaks out via leased line, just a guess. Maybe their router has different firmware on it then and that's why yours won't work? As for not being able to use Telkom ADSL, don't take their word for it, if you can get a Telkom phone line installed and its connected to an ADSL-enabled exchange you should be able to get ADSL.

This is not the first time I have heard of this type of thing. I know they have a few developments in Cape Town and they where going to start in JHB soon according to their Website. Are you up there or down here by the sea?
