I am in the market for a 2nd hand automatic car. Some Audi A4s are reasonably priced. I still have this fear that all Audi automatics are duds.

Reason for this is my dad had an Audi 500 SE & an '99 A4 where both autoboxes went into limpmode. Last year a colleague of mine spent R8k on his 2007 A3 automatic's gearbox at a backyard mechanic (Audi quoted him R20k more).

Which gearboxes should I steer clear of? Steptronic, S-tronic?

The current Audi I am looking at has a S-tronic box.

i have the b8 multitronic, and so far no issues, 2011 model, with just over 160k on the clock

The only confirmed not negligent Audi gearbox issues I've knowledge on are on the RS models because of the power being too much.
I've had a 2005 2.0T multitronic and it was awesome and never gave a days hassles.

Just make sure their services are up to date, and when buying secondhand make sure that the gearbox oil has been done (every 60 000km if I remember correctly).

My dad drove a 6 speed DSG box for almost 200 000km and it was just as quick and smooth as ever.

Wasn't it a problem with the B7 Audis which they fixed in the B8 version? Ja Audis lose value very fast, but if you plan on driving it till the wheels come off then there are a lot of 2nd hand bargains to be had.

Good day members, I currently drive a 2012 AUDI A3 TDI S TRONIC, And I'm sitting with a similar problem regarding the gearbox, the 1st question I was asked by the mechanic was this gearbox ever serviced whilst on motorplan...as per my service book it wasn't serviced & now Audi now expects me to carry the damage costs whilst they didn't do their part of the job...please advise as I'm planning to go the legal route
