Problems download from microsoft.com

I can't seem to download from microsoft.com without turning off windows firewall. This just doesn't make much sense to me. Is there a setting or something that I'm missing? Or is there another program causing this conflict?

The only security tool I use is Avira Antivir Free.

Is it normal Windows updates or when you click a link on the Microsoft.com site

Add wuauclt.exe and svchost.exe to the whitelist of your Firewall application
Rule is for outbound
and the following URLs must be whitelisted:
update.microsoft.com
download.microsoftupdates.com
windowsupdate.microsoft.com
