Product Survey - 192k Uncapped

Sigh. It's all the 4Mbps users saying no. Obviously they aren't the target market. So please. If you have a 4meg line this product is not for you. So move along now.

I'm also pretty sure all the people on a 384 line and 1 or 2 gig cap might really like this product.
 
If totally unshaped and unthrottled you will be able to do a maximum of 50GB on a 192kbps line in a month. My guess is you will reach only half that with their slightly shaped & ribbed for your pleasure approach so you are looking at 25GB a month.

sure, there is a market for everything, but trying to divide the crappiest speed package of the crappiest internet country, in HALF? This would be like halving the food supply of Ethiopia

I think some people here are being a bit harsh.

I've browsed on 192, 384, 4096, 7.2 and faster and on pc's and different isp's in 4 different countries. If one excludes downloading, it's my experience that browsing at any of those different speeds is pretty much the same give or take a second or two here and there. On the faster connections, you still find yourself waiting for factors such as the server at the other end to respond, the congestion at various points along your datas journey, etc.

Sure, downloading on a 192 kbps line can be an exercise in patience, but hey - not everyone wants to download stuff. Their windows and AV and Adobe updates they can leave for when they're not using their PC's.

If they can have an always on connection (ie: ADSL as opposed to the dreaded dial-up) where they can leave their pc's on and connected so updates can carry on at their own pace, their Skype can stay connected and they can see who's online, their mail prog checks for their mail every half an hour, etc, etc, and know that all this they can have for a set monthly fee with no 'bill-shock' at the end of the month then I think it's a winner.

Personally, I don't think the product would be my first choice, but I definitely believe there's a market for it.
 
What I don't get is why none of the ISP's are willing to provide anything between the 512 and 4096 offerings? Surely if hey can throttle a 384 line down to 192, they can throttle a 4096 line down to 1024/2048/3072? (or pretty much any speed)

While this wouldn't have any effect on the shaped offerings it would give you some leeway with unshaped offerings where the jump from 512 unshaped to 4096 unshaped puts the 4096 offering out of most people's reach.

What would be ideal would be if you could allow users to select *exactly* what speed they want to pay for, whether it's 64k, 4096k or any speed in between. Even better would be if they could specify how they want to split that speed into shaped/unshaped so that if you really need 4096 fully unshaped you could pay accordingly, or you could opt for 4096 fully shaped, or any split in between. I realise that splitting a single account into shaped and unshaped is a technological challenge, but it would be nice.
 
the only way this account would be feasible is if you make it faster at night, when the network isn't as busy.
 
Yup, same as most people here. Would consider it as a 24/7 torrent account. As long as its unshaped...

yeah markface, but your power consumption bill would skyrocket, especially if you have something like an 800w Power supply or something.

You might as well take that extra money you are going to be spending and get a mweb 384 uncapped account.

Consider the price though. For 40gigs.

Maybe openweb could consider letting it boost to 256 after hours.

For someone that has a lot of local only gigs they can use route sentry to get their stuff off news servers locally and game internationally on their unshaped line.

This makes no sense. You can't split a physical line so you're either:

A. Paying for at least 384k line and a 192k connection on your own (And getting 50% of the speed at 80% of the cost of a 384k line/account combo).

B: You're splitting the cost of the line with someone in the same location and paying for two seperate 192k accounts in which case simply splitting the cost of a 384k all-in-one account makes more sense, both because it's cheaper and because you're not limited to 192k when the person you're splitting with isn't using the line.

If there's something I'm missing here, let me know?

@MrBEEP: Who did you envisage as the target market for this? Dial up users need to factor in not only the cost of this product but also the additional cost of at least a 384k ADSL line. Light ADSL users (under 5-10GB a month) are better off getting a capped account. Heavier users are unlikely to accept such a low line speed. 192k unshaped isn't enough for some modern games either, so no serious gamer will likely opt for this either.

Most days I would. If games like BF and COD and in some cases WoW didn't struggle on a 192k line I'd consider it these days - TV ep's which are my main pirate pleasure weigh in at 400/800MB and I could live with only grabbing one or two a day.

Unfortunately my useage puts me just over what a 192k connection is capable of handling.

If the price is right, sure. Hell, I'm pulling about a gig a day atm. If I'm not in front of the screen then 192k is fine....but if I'm waiting to a youtube video then 192 is not on.

I'm tempted to say that the users here are more likely to go for it than others. e.g. More likely to leave downloads running 24/7 than the avg tannie on Telkom Do1.
