Hey Friends,

I would like your opinion. Do you believe there is room for a 192k Uncapped ADSL account in the market?

Would you, or someone you know be interested in such a product for around R149 per month?

I look forward to your responses.

Kind regards
MrBEEP

if it includes line rental then I think allot of peolpe woudl consider it.

This price would exclude line rental.

R149 is too high considering the fact that you can get 384kbps for not much more.

offering those accounts is just ridiculous, better off just using dial up.

Isn't Mweb uncapped 384 including line rental cheaper than the proposed 192k from OW and then the Telkom fees? I haven't checked the price lately.

Pretty close considering Mweb with line is R349. Line alone is R133 now and then you going to pay R149, so thats R282 vs R349, most folks would pay the extra R67 for double the speed.

If you could make a total offer of R200 or just over, then folks could use it but the main cost is telkom in this case so I don't think your going to get anywhere.

lolz I was on Openwebs 192k uncapped trial back in 2006. I pulled down 30gigs a month! I think it only lasted about 4 months...

I don't think that there is space for that product at that price.

I'd consider it. Used as a dedicated line on a separate dedicated torrent downloading box left on 24 / 7 / 365.

Shaped or unshaped? Unshaped might not be too bad...

If you can run at that speed (less overheads due to your line being 384k??) and not ~80% of 192k it's quite good.

Not too sure if that would be the case though.

(192 kbps) * 24 hours * 30 = 59.3261719 gigabytes = ~ R2.53/GB
(384 kbps) * 24 hours * 30 = 118.652344 gigabytes = ~ R1.86/GB
Usual 384 average is ~ 85GB = ~ R2.59/GB

What would you be able to use on 192k?

Another thing to consider is the upload speed- would that be 64k? That really sucks...

Is R149 the best you can do on pricing? At a time when people are hoping for line speeds to be increased, offering lower speed accounts will require seriously low prices to be considered.

Oh, this backward thinking is starting to make my head spin. What this would be is a 384 line split between two subscribers. That way they can charge more than half and make a profit.
Of course anything sells, but looking at how Mweb downgrades their 384 into dialup territory, shaping a 192 line would be senseless.

Would it be unshaped and symmetrical?

If yes would be good for a lone gamer.

192k does not meet even our archaic broadband definition.

I believe there is a place for it though, if it is priced accordingly. I can see younger people tacking such an account onto their parents 1GB Do BB telkom rubbish. They can then download while mom and pop can still browse/email.

As usual, the lower end packages will not offer the same per GB value as the 4meg lines. I'm wondering though why they can't be quite a bit cheaper though.

(4 Mbps) * 24 hours * 31 = 1.27716064 terabytes = ~ R0.75/GB *(theoretically, of course)

~75c vs R2.50- that is the problem. These accounts could go for as little as R60. Event that is R1/GB, ~30% more expensive than the top accounts.

PS: My maths is horrible. I'm just trying to give an idea of roughly what each account/speed is capable of, and their associated value. YMMV. :)

Well, you can still buy Chappies bubblegum. If its cheap enough, there's always a market.

At any rate I think the 192k account would only satisfy a very niche minority of users, so tbh I wouldn't even consider it. Unless it were *dirt* cheap but thanks to Telkom that's not really possible.

192k serious ? maybe back in 1998...

...i'm sorry but this makes me think of this picture for some reason:
