Projector Screen Alternatives?

Didn't take any of the back :( Screen is up :) not as neat as I wanted it, the one corner needs a bit of tightening, but I'll wait and let it settle first to see if the material stretches further.

There is a bit of damage to the material - but it can't be seen with the projector on. At the moment I'm preferring the picture projected on the wall - but I think its because I'm not used to the white, and it needs calibrating, apparently a black border also helps considerably.

Here is the screen mounted, you can see the bottom left corner needs a bit of fixing.

Those projectors look tempting. And sooooo cheap (under R 10 000, all incl. from Amazon). But I've got two questions: how does the image quality compare to a 55" Full HD plasma? and, does the fan noise bother you?

I thought it would - but I've never actually noticed it - and the projector is mounted directly above my head. I think if I had the projector lamp on BRIGHT I would hear it - also, there's a specific mode for inland, which also makes it quite loud.

I'm not using bright because it actually doesn't make that much of a difference in a well darkened room - and I put up curtains that allow total blackout.

Which screens are you talking about on Amazon? One day I'll probably get a motorized one, but I think for the size I want, the cheapest is R17,000.

I meant the projectors on Amazon are cheap. Have you looked at Esquire's motorised screens; they didn't seem too costly?

I'll have to decide. Maybe I'll go look at a few projectors in action. My room won't be dark all the time, and I don't need a 3m screen. Maybe plasma is the answer. I'll see next year when I'm ready to buy.

Oh right - yeah - with the current exchange rate the projectors are quite cheap.

I recon if you're going to spend money on a projector screen, you need to pay for quality, else you get terrible contrast ratio's. I'll see if I can find the photo I saw comparing blackout material and projector screen material.

Yo been a while since i was here... Been really busy at work...

@ Xrapidx that screen looks cool... How does it compare to just projecting on a white wall?

I haven't had a chance to make any changes to my setup since my last posts. I've decided to hold back on getting the unit built as I want to do that last.
At the moment my to do list includes installing down lights with those x-10 modules and getting a harmony remote to control them. I'm also thinking of getting a PS Move this weekend but not sure how well it will work. I've read that the light from the projector may interfere with the camera....

I have a Move - haven't noticed any problems... although I haven't used it much.

to be honest, I haven't used the screen much - been a bit sick.. It looks pretty good :) But my wall was brown... so that might be it.

The X10 modules don't work with 12v down-lights, even if they say they do... I've gone through two of the R700 jobies, it works for awhile and then dies.

I'll keep that in mind. When I asked them they said it would work with 12v lights. Can i use normal 240v lights instead? Plus the distributor is in EL so they said if i have any problems with their products i can return them. How easy are they to install? I still need to plan where i want to put the lights etc. Thinking of installing 8 down lights with a center light on 3 circuits.

Ask them which product they recommend? Because in my experience, it doesn't. I think you do get 240v controllers as well.

The actual installation is relatively easy, mine was a problem because all the wires in my switch box were the same colour - so it took me awhile to figure out what was what.

I cant remember which modules they quoted me on off hand. I think they recommended that i use 3 of those "in wall dim 2" modules.

Hmmm - I wouldn't recommend that - because its one way communication, so if one gets out of sync - it gets messy.

I'm not really in a hurry to get it... Will do some more research into it and the alternatives. How's the PS Move? I've never used it before. The display models at the shops are either on charge or the salesmen have no idea how to use it. What's it like on a huge screen?

It was ok - only used it for around 30min - it seemed quite responsive, I think its important not to get the light from the projector in the webcam picture.

One-day when I find a second controller, I'll test it properly.

I'll shop around this weekend for the Move. There's no shortage of them here.

We have Starter packs here - but no controllers... just as well - I only have R300 left till next week :p

I've seen plenty of them at Game, BT Games, Incredible Connection, Musica etc...
