Prophecy sold me a dud pc...

Hi.

I just got my pc from prophecy, now when i tried to install windows it says there's no harddrive installed...and i ordered 2gb of ram and there are 2 1gb in there but it only detects 1gb.

Im furious...they say they do testing before they ship it, how the F@#$ did they send a pc that doesnt even work??

Im getting my money back and never, ever using this crap establishment again.

i'm assuming you phoned them about your problems, right?
perhaps something went wonky with delivery

oh, and by all means, use digital planet and kalahari for your pre-built computer needs ;)
 
well i dont see how i can stuff something up.

I am trying to install XP but how would i get new drivers istalled if it doent even detect its own harddrive?

And i only just got the PC, after hours, so i cant phone them

You can download them on the PC you're posting on, just Google for the Windows XP SATA drivers for your particular brand of hard drive and you should get what you need. Right at the start of Windows XP's install it says "Press F6 if you need to install any third-party SATA/RAID drivers" :)
 
But even if i go into BIOS, it shows there's no Harddrives detected...
 
Im not to clued up with these "new" pc's but its only got one small cable connecting it to the motherboard. Its doesnt have any other connections on it...or anywhere to connect anything else...*sigh* :(

It should have two cables, one small cable connecting it to the motherboard and another which powers it. If it only has the one then it's not receiving power.
 
hey

phone them and speak to paul or to henk, prophecy is good, i had a power supply 3 to be exact that kept popping they even gave me a more expensive one instead, just speak to them, everybody can and will make mistakes in life, if thats the case...

Sometimes components can come loose when they are shipped. Its a good idea to make sure that the RAM is in properly (give it a firm push on the top and make sure the clips on either side are in properly) and also make sure both ends of the red cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard are plugged in properly. There should also be a cable connecting the hard drive to the PSU. Make sure this one is properly connected on both ends. I have seen BIOS's that don't detect the SATA drives so that is not necessarily a problem.
 
there 2 cables here...one says P4 one says P6 and they look the same...any ideas?
 
Really abe, what mobo in this day and age does not detect a sata drive?

Calling rubbish on that one but i stand to be corrected.

If you have not phoned them i highly suggest you do that before going any further on this forum.

err .... am I stating the obvious here by saying that it seems it has no juice? I sense one moerse huge public apology to Prophecy coming up if that's the case ;)
 
Has the drive been partioned? Because there is no such thing as a plug and play HDD unless it's been used before. And if you have a problem with a shop, you should first contact the shop and tell them what the problem is instead of throwing a tantram like the majority of illiterate computer users.

I had one at a customer about 2 weeks ago that did just that. I am not sure how old it was but the point is that they do exist. Assuming that it will always show up could leave the poor guy restarting time after time without even going into the Window setup. Assumption is the mother of all f..kups.

BTW: You didn't perhaps get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning by any chance?
 
Honestly, if there's only one cable, then there's no power and hence the hard drive won't be detected.

Regarding the RAM, I dunno, but try swap the dimms? Like if the current setup is DIMM0 in PORT0 and DIMM1 in PORT2, try:

1) DIMM0 ONLY or DIMM1 ONLY in PORT0, 1, 2, 3 (depending how many ports you have... I'm assuming a 4-port motherboard).
2) DIMM0 in PORT0 and DIMM1 in PORT2 or DIMM0 in PORT1 and DIMM1 in PORT3 (remember the colour-coding for dual-channel usage... Consult your manual if you get confused).

If (1) works in all configurations you can be fairly certain that
a) Both DIMMs are fine
b) All ports work for single-module, single-channel operation
 
If the entire machine carries a warranty, u better not have broken any seals opening it up :P HDD should have one small cable (going to the mobo), and a 4 pin power cable (going to the PSU). If you don't know what you are doing, i wouldn't take sn3rd advise of playing with the ram, because i have seen many guys break ram chips trying to play with them and touching the goldpin goodness!! A bad experience with a company doesn't mean they suck, just means you had bad luck. I personally haven't used prophecy, but i hear A LOT of good things about them. Send it back, or if they have a store take it in.

And since you haven't spoken to them yet, you shouldn't be bashing the company. This is why sites like HelloPeter totally suck, as people post without actually looking into things!
