Hey Guys n Gals,

Anyone know of a simple, decent, FREE software that can protect USB Flash drives and external drives?

Basically have a "Work" folder on each that contains sensitive security info and want a software that will request a password to open or view that particular file.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Folder Lock is a fast file encryption software that can also password protect folders, lock files and protect USB Drives and lock CD/DVDs. Folder Lock creates encrypted storage called 'Lockers'. You can keep as many of your private files and folders in your Locker and password protect it with a single click. You can transfer, secure and backup these Lockers. Lockers are portable, you can keep them in USB Drives, CD/DVD, and notebooks or transfer them via email or upload. These Lockers are undeletable on the computer where Folder Lock is installed. You can create as many Lockers as you want. Different users can create different Lockers with different passwords as well. With Folder Lock, you can choose either to encrypt using 256-bit AES on-the-fly encryption or lock files, folders and drives anywhere on your computer. Each Locker can contain your encrypted files as well as your personal list of locked items. Furthermore, Folder Lock's options like hack monitoring, stealth mode, data shredding, history cleaning, auto protection, portable USB autoplay feature and virtual keyboard can enhance file locking and encryption beyond anything ever achieved. In addition, a locker's delete, move and rename are password protected to prevent data loss.

Meh. It's a 25-use trial demo. :/

So i just got truecrypt, and plz excuse my n00bnessness here, but how the hell does it work? It's tuning do this for that and that for this if this equals that and and and... anything a little more simple to implement? Or any advice on how to set it up for a flash drive?
I used it to create a 2Gig encrypted area (which is portable, just load it onto your flash or whatever) - which you mount using truecrypt and it creates an extra drive. Give it a password and off you go.

So with a truecrypt encypted partition, can i insert the drive into any PC and simply put in the password to access it or does it not work like that?

You'll need truecrypt loaded on the PC you're reading the drive though afaik.

I'm pretty happy with truecrypt, so haven't tried anything else.

But a quick google revealed this... http://www.storagecrypt.com

It looks like its free, and from the website it has
Fully portable use, you may take it to anywhere on the fly without the software installed on each machine

Again, I haven't tried it myself, but it looks good on paper. Let us know if/how it works for you.

EDIT: On second thoughts, its not free (7 day trial) - sorry about that.

Haha, thats exactly the type of thing im looking for... Also found "LocknGo" which looks great, but again, only a trial...

+1 Truecrypt. Just extract the files into a folder on your flash disk, run it. Create an encrypted container on the flash disk. Voila, it's portable!

Ja, but keep the truecrypt installer on your flashdisk too. Then just install that on any pc you need to view the files.

Got nothing on TrueCrypt i would imagine, but wasn't looking for THAT much functionality anyways... This simply locks and unlocks folders or files from a simple "browse to" feature. Runs by itself, so no partitioning or installation needed...
