PS2 what does it all do?

oh so Area 51 was not so great, pity though.

yeah those arcade games really had us going when they first came out hey.

I recently got a PS2 and some games and my daughter and i quite enjoy it but what all can it do?
The PS2 console is chipped so we can play copied games but some of them don't wanna work but thats ok as there are others that do work.

Why does it have USB ports and it says it has an 8mb memory card in it so can you upgrade that or what.

Sorry for the stupid questions but this is the first time i had a Playstation of any kind.

The playstation 2 can do a lot more than play games I will some examples below

MEDIA CENTRE

Your Ps2 can be converted into a media centre with a piece of sofware called SMS (simple media system), I plays files Video Files (AVI and MPEG), Audio files (most formats), Pictures (JPG).

Best part of all is it can be networked to your PC using a LAN cable so you can access your Media Files from your PC.

You can also plug in a flash drive or External HDD (must have external power, the usb port doesn't have enough power to run the other ones.

Buy a cheap universal remote, set it up as a SONY DVD PLAYER and you can control your PS2 with it through the built in IR sensor (locate bottom right of the front of your console)

EMULATE SEGA, NINTENDO, MAME ETC

Using Hombrew ELF's (PS2 executable files) you can run games from most of the old consoles on your PS2, perfect for kids as the nintendo games were much simpler in gameplay than the games we have today, less violent as well.

Roms can be loaded from CD, Flash Drive or Memory Card.

This is not to say that it is not suitable to adults, Tetris, Circus Charlie and of course Mario Brothers Rock.

BROWSING THE INTERNET

Not sure if this works in SA, its apparently possible using EGBrowser however I cannot confirm this.

PLAYING GAMES FROM NETWORK SHARE OR USB HDD

Load all your PS2 games on to your computers hard drive and play them on your PS2 without having to insert a disc.

OpenPS2Loader can load games over your LAN/USB HDD and graphically display list of Games available, the new version has a function called IGR (In Game Reset) which will allow you to reset your PS2 from within the game.

MOVE SAVE GAMES TO FLASH DRIVE

Using uLaunchElf you can copy your files from your memory card to a Flash drive, you can even set your PS2 as an FTP server to access your memory card on your PC via LAN Cable

BACKUP GAMES

Your playstation can play backup games I have yet to here of a game that cannot be copied, just be sure to use good quality discs and burn them at a speed of 4X or else it won't work.

PLAY BACKUP GAMES WITHOUT MOD CHIP

For PS2 made in 2008 and older you can install software on a memory card to do all of the above without having to open your playstation and void your warranty.

For PS2 made after 2008 you can use a swap trick that is not as convenient but is effective.

LINUX

Linux can be installed on FAT PS2 with an internal HDD, does not work on SLIM PS2

OH a quick word of warning.
The Mame disc you have may contain certain explicit porn mahyong or naughty arcade games.
I stumbled across a naked man porn title on mame that really did a great job of embarrassing me in front of my friends....
NOT SUITABLE FOR PERSONS UNDER 18!

Otherwise enjoy your ps2, im looking to get one again for the nostalgia.

really?? we last played mame32 years ago and then found we had a few copies of it here and although there were thousands of games on it only a few worked but i must say we never came across and naked people on it.

if i had to put that disc in the PS2 now without changing anything would it work?

no probs it at least shows you guys know exactly what to look for because you get the same results, when i google PS2 i just get waffle.

I see there is a lot of interested in launching applications on your PS2.

Heres a guide to using uLaunchElf to run custom app with a modchip installed.

It is also possible to run uLaunchElf without the need of a modchip by using a patched memory card (date code 8b or earlier) or disc swap method, but this is not included in this tutorial.

uLaunch Elf

First of you will need a DVD version of uLaunchElf you can find it here

Extract the zip file and burn the ISO file to a good quality blank dvd at 4X any faster and the disc won't read.

You can use the CD version of uLaunchELF but I don't recommend it as CD's put more strain on your laser than DVD's.

Put your disc in the Playstation and it should boot to the uLaunchELF program.

EMULATORS

I am using Nintendo as an example as this emulator is pretty much stable and from my experience is compatible with most flash drives.

First get yourself a copy of of a Nintendo Emulator here

And some ROMS (games) herel

Copy the emulator(make sure you unzip it) and your roms (must have .nes extension) to the root of your empty flash drive (try it with one rom first to see that it works) and put it in your Playstations USB port.

Insert your uLaunchElf Disc.

On the main screen go to "FileBrowser", Select "mass:/", Select "packed_fceu.elf", your emulator should launch.

You can push "SELECT" and centre screen if necessary.

Go to "mass:" and select your game, Enjoy.

OTHER SOFTWARE

Simple Media System link

Plays DivX, MP3 etc

Open PS2 Loader link

Play games from networked PC or usb Hard Drive

I was under the impression all this depended on the mod chip you had installed?
Lower end mod chips didn't make facility for intalling apps or running homebrew. I know the Modbo couldn't run homebrew, and that was a pretty common chip.
I had the O2 chip installed on mine, that was a pretty comprehensive chip, and I had a HDD with all my games on it in iso.

I had SMS installed... it was a sad and disappointing experience. Only 1 out of every 10 media files would play, and of those at least half froze along the way :( . Music worked fine tho, :)

The uLaunchELF DVD will allow you to launch any Homebrew apps, It only needs the modchip to boot the DVD the application does the rest.

My playstation is soft modded with Free MC Boot and has SMS, OpenPS2Loader, uLaunchELF and ESR installed.

SMS plays all my media fine no problems, I don't even use my DVD player anymore, the newer version doesn't have as many problems as the older ones.

How the hell did you get OpenPS2Loader to work  I've got Free MCBoot and everything else, followed what little tutorials I could find and still OpenPS2Loader stops at 1 when it loads the network.

Weird thing is that I can see the PS2 is connected to my router but still nothing  lol would be awesome IF I could get this working :D

I don't think there is a problem with XP.

First lets check if everything is setup on your PC.

1. Turn off your windows firewall
2. Make sure you have "Simple file sharing enabled, To enable Simple File Sharing:
My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View Tab
At the bottom you will see the option "Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)", so place a mark in the box and click OK.
3. Make sure your shared directory is named correctly and everyone has read and write access, the share name should be "PS2SMB".
4. Get your IP address, click on Start > Run , type cmd. At the command prompt type ipconfig /all, this will give you your network settings, take note of your IP address, subnet mask and default gateway.

Check your settings on OPL

Navigate to network Config

For PS2

The settings must be in the same range as your PC, i.e. if your PC's ip address is 192.168.0.1 set your PS2 ip address to 192.168.0.10.

Subnet Mask and gateway must be the same as your PC

For PC

Type in your PC's ip address
The share name should be "PS2SMB"
Port should be 445

Save the settings and goto network games to see if it works

Also make sure your games are loaded to your pc in the usbadvance format using this tool USBUtil V2
