I see the PS3 Slim 120GB is now available at R3799 (it's apparently the RRP).

Is it cheaper anywhere else?

What's the verdict on these consoles? I'm quite keen, and at THAT price, it's a no brainer to me. But I don't want to sit with the kinds of RROD worries that have plagued XBox owners.

Somewhere here there was also a post about a PS3 Slim 250GB + Uncharted 2 bundle, but as I recall, it was unconfirmed by Sony. What is the general consensus regarding the possible validity of this rumour?

I'm also not too familiar with the price update cycle of consoles: how often are prices updated (dropped :D)? When do you think the first price-cut on the slim (given that it's already a price cut from the original) will happen? And how low do you think the price can really go, given that Sony is already operating at a loss on these consoles?

Just make sure you really want a console before you buy, most PC guys I know have consoles as decorations, like mine :)

Although PS3 slim in an attractive multimedia device:erm:

If you are going to play games on it then get it, media center is a bonus.

Don't forget : Extra games, extra controller, cables, broadband connection
The cost of ownership of any console is a lot more than the purchase price.

+1 the cost of the console will be least of your cost. But looking around at 2nd hand PS3 games you can pay about 30-50% of the price of original and the discs have no scratches on them.
The nice thing about the PS3 is that you can fit a normal laptop drive at a later stage. So you can easily place a 500GB for about R1000.00 and putting it into the PS3 does not void the warranty. The slims are also built more efficiently.

Yeh- I hardly use my PS3 anymore - besides for blu-ray movies... :o

I'm looking at both gaming and multimedia... It just seems too good to be true.

Until now I've been using my notebook (as it has HDMI out) as a multimedia system on my TV. But it gets a bit of a hassle when I want to have something on the TV while working on my notebook.

I've already thought through the idea of extras... It's an inevitable cost, and I don't count it toward the present cost, because no matter what I get, I'll be buying extras.

Can anyone comment on the picture quality of the Bluray playback? I've read conflicting views, but the consensus is that it's adequate. However some places reported that in some dark scenes, moire was visible, and some jaggies were seen in DVD upscaling situations.

What screen are you going to be using? Doubt you would notice a difference unless you have a Bravia X-Series or similar..

I'm currently using a Samsung 32" Series 5. Not the best screen in the world, but it displays 1920 x 1080p really well.

i got a PS3 slim today. meh. what a let down.
glad i still got my elite to keep me company. the dual shock 3 controller feels tiny and flimsy compared to the xbox controller.
i'm being a bit biased as i need proper games to play - bought little big planet. OMG what a poo-fest - i just want to vomit rainbows. i'm really hoping that uncharted 2 will redeem the console for me. anyone got suggestions on any console exclusives? i'm getting uncharted 1 (&2), thinking about demons souls (sp?) god of war 1-3. not really keen on killzone.
hmm. i think i'll stick to xbox for now with regards to the multiplats.

[to the foaming at the mouth fanboy type - this is just my opinion]

PS3 can play most mpeg4 format movies. DVD upscaling is pretty good depending on the quality of the DVD but if you own a 42" and above, you will see the pixelation. Bluray movies are great. Thats if they are done in HD and not old movies moved onto the bluray format.
If you want to see how the PS3 fairs in DVD upscaling, try using your DVD player to play the same movie and then pop it into the PS3. You will notice quite a difference.

I did it. At around 5pm, I went to Menlyn. Looked at all the stores, the R3799 stores were sold out. Some places had it for R3899... I was VERY tempted. In a last attempt, I thought I'd check Musica, who I've generally found to be quite pricey. They had a R3799 unit left! I was over the moon. The manager dude says to me "Oh, if you pay an extra R200, you get these two games" and points to Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell Double Agent.

So I'm over the moon. Just finished watching an (awesomely) upscaled DVD. Now gotta start building that Bluray collection :D

Even put the purchase on the girlfriend's Clicks Clubcard, and earned like 800 points, haha.

PS3 ftw :D

enjoy dude!

dam im jealous!!!!!:D im thinking about getting the ps3 slim at the end of the year. king in terms of the gaming experience how is it??

You.... @%^@^(^&@(@^&(@$^, i AM SO JEALOUS! (dAMN CAPS LOCK) Enjoy mate, hope you will find it very satisfying and enjoyable.

Now the sell the Phat for a slim? Nah I will keep both!

You mean the Gf made 800 points? :D

:D :D

I'm so damn happy with it... Just takes some getting used to... Especially getting everything to just work with my network setup :(

And needs like 140MB download for system update

Each to his own, LBP is a unique game not to everyones liking, you should have trialed game demo's you can download for free first before buying, let that be lesson no.1, there are many very good games available. Anyway if you want to sell it for a good second hand price PM me.

nah. i'm liking the console & LBP more now, after the initial buyer's remorse. lol. i must say it was SUPER easy connecting the ps3 wirelessly to the router (i have an irrational fear and total lack of know-how regarding wireless networks).

I must say I've spent way too much time creating levels in LBP...became an obsession for a while! As someone said before you just have to find the right game(s) I guess. I didn't enjoy MGS IV (it wasn't bad...but it wasn't the second coming either) and any FPS style game just doesn't do it for me on a console.

Truth be told I found my new love again and I'm sorry I ever thought of neglecting her like that...my PC is still the best!

Just another update for anyone who's considering this console... Two words:

DO IT ! :D

Seriously... ;)

I've never been a huge fan of consoles, but the plug-n-play is amazing. Even the gf's getting into it!

So should I get rid of my current PS3 and buy a PS3 Slim?
Unless you are looking at the bravia sync option, most of the features are the same. Or if you like the new look of the slim. At least if my phat breaks, getting a new slim won't break the bank. :D
