PSP vs DS

DS games for hardcore gamers? Your joking right? maybe for hardcoire fans of mario, sonic and metroid, but not hardcore gamers

I've got a PSP, a DS, and an iPhone. Bought 14 games for the DS, 5 for the PSP, and a few for the iPhone but those are much cheaper.

The PSP's really is a very capable system, but I don't think it's the "best" choice for anything. It's too bulky to be just a media player, the major games are mostly ports or scaled down versions of ones that could be played on a PS2, and I find the shape of it gives my hand cramps after any prolonged playing (but that's just me).

The DS has games which may not be advanced but they're things I probably wouldn't be able to find on any other system. I'm not going to find series on other consoles like Ace Attorney, Professor Layton or even just simpler RPGs like Mario & Luigi. It's also got great battery life and feels nice to play on.

The iPhone is great as a media player, and it might be able to start taking some share away from the DS for casual games. I think two-thirds of the games I bought for the DS could work on the iPhone, but it would need developers to develop more full games for it and deal with the much lower App Store pricing.

However if I had only a PC, spent a lot of time in my parents car, was 10 years younger, and I had to decide to get one value-for-money portable device: I'd probably choose the PSP.

I got myself a PSP recently because I have access to lots of games. I made my decision because it's possible to download a DS emulator and try those out on my computer first.

Again with this hardcore tag... you guys love to throw it around along with the "serious gamer" tag.

Look at the numbers... 10 million units a year. Over the lifespan of the DS more people have bought the console than the entire population of South Africa. PSP is a cumstain compared to the ocean of DS, that is "hardcore" man.. its "serious" numbers. Nintendo is the biggest name in consoles since forever... and these little fanbois are trying to tell us that its not for serious gamers. :erm::erm::erm::erm::erm::erm::erm::erm:

I think touching the screen and pushing buttons at the same time confuses them, so they claim its to casual for them

There's a lot of confusion in this thread. As I said I have both, but prefer the DS (to the point where I don't buy games for PSP anymore).

Points of confusion:
The DS games are childish - Yeah sure some of them are, probably more than on other systems, but you don't have to buy them. Besides, sometimes they are actually awesome. There are plenty of mature games, enough to bankrupt you anyway.

PSP is only PS2 ports - There are lots of original games on psp... locoroco anyone? And even if you just buy ports, at least you can play them without lugging a tv, console and controllers around.

PSP is a media system - this is a joke... yeah it's ok for watching a movie maybe, but you need big memory cards, and there are much, much better media players out there, even most cellphones. The interface is tedious and it doesn't fit in your pocket. take it for what it is, a portable games console. mp3 compatibility is nice, but not a convincing argument for superiority.

I could go on but whatever... Personally there are quite a few DS games i want to get my hands on: Hotel Dusk, Again, Spirit Tower, Scribblenauts, Bowsers Inside Story, new SMB not to mention games i have like Chinatown Wars and Metroid. On the other side i looked at IGN's recent list of top 25 psp games ever and didn't really get excited about one of them. But that's just me.

I completely agree with you, and P.S., scribblenauts is awesome, get it

I wanna get Elite Beat Agents, it's awesome. The touch screen just makes it even more awesomer.. lol.

DS sucks, PSP rules

END or story

:D

Tpex makes the most sensible arugment on this page...well done bro...with you 100%...

@KM2 : True, and maybe the same can be said about the PS3...oh, with one exception...let me paint the picture, you take product offerings of the psp compare them to world leaders in those particular fields and go..."PSP is OK"...you mentioned games, scaled down PS2 games, you do know that there is over R130 million PS2 sold (highest sold console in history?) with a software library of over 1900 games with plenty of them considered top notch...it's a real compliment saying the PSP is a scaled down PS2 versions...but if you got at games like God of War, Resistance, GT, LBP and Killzone, not only are they not scaled down versions of PS2 versions they could be considered to be scaled down versions of PS3 games...

I think your analysis was fair overall, but the suggestion is misleading...I chose the PSP because it satisfies my mobile gaming needs...i don't want to change the gamer I am just because i'm on the move, i can't understand why people suggest you gotta play casual on the go and more 'core on console...i enjoy core experiences and it doesn't matter if it's on PC, mobile or console...

Saffakenera : Too much flash, not enough game ...similar to could be said about an Aston Martin DBS V12..so maybe another compliment...

Francois : Fair comments, but disagree with a few...the psp is a cool media playback device...so let's see what i can put together:

1. Video : Large, high quality widescreen (16:9) display for video playback
2. Video : Support of MP4 and AVI.
3. Video : Use optical media (UMD is not great but it's there)
4. Video : AV out on the 2000 and later models (progressive scanning with 1:1 ratio possible for games)
5. Audio : Multichannel & 3d audio
6. Audio : ATRAC3 plus support
7. Audio : AAC support (MP4)
8. Audio : MP3, WAV & WMA support
9. Audio : Streaming radio
10. Streaming : Stream audio (Support formats) from PS3
11. Streaming : Stream video (supported formats) from PS3
12. System : TV Tuner peripheral
13. System : Support for many of the popular graphics formats.
14. System : Internet broswer support to play support formats streaming from internet.
15. System : Skype

That's 15 i can think of...doubt the DS even has 5...I agree with your negatives like the form factor, but there's just too many positives when compared to other systems ...

@nerf : Should read bud...seriously, it's not just a perception...the DS gives a more casual experience (and i'm using the word when comparing it to a PSP)...and didn't hear anyone except you talk about serious gamers...i said core...if you don't think most wii gamers and teh platform is based on casual gaming, then i'll be shocked...

btw, the PSP has sold more units than the entire SA popluation too...over 50 million so dunno how you want to use that to differentiate...Besides nintendo's portables, the PSP is the most popular handheld..so not sure how you talking numbers and trying to knock it...

The only thing that's worse than fanboy's...are fanboy's that scream "fanboy's" all the time...only because they think people will assume they are not fanboys...it is sooo obvious from your comments that are you are a fanboy too...as many on this board are...

No doubt the PSP is very capable, and I do like that, but most midrange phones are just as capable, at least regarding the features used most often, and I always have my phone with me. Media wise, the PSP does "everything", but it does nothing particularly well. For that reason, I just see it as a games console. And as a games console, I prefer my DS to my PSP.

What I do like about the PSP as a console is the better use of multiplayer via the PSN network. The DS friend code system works, but one account, like PSN, makes more sense. Also, if you have a PS3 I think the PSP is probably a nice companion product.

Both are successful consoles, both have good games, and if I had money, I would buy more games for both, but as it stands, the next 5 games on my list to buy when I can afford it, all happen to be DS titles.

^^+1 PSP is a subpar media player at best. Compared to iPhone it's a joke. Of course DS does it much worse but it was never intended to be a multimedia machine.

the DS gives a more casual experience

That's just nonsense - unless you mean in the sense that you don't have to wait for it to fire up a UMD so you can actually play it for short periods of time. Advance Wars, Lunar Knights, Nanostray, Civ, AoE, 2 zelda games, ninja gaiden, FF(plus tactics), Elite Beat Agents, GTA, metroid - even a number of the Mario branded games are very deep (i.e. the rpg series).

PSP has some really excellent games but the whole platform strategy is to transpose successful console IPs onto a small screen, compromising wherever necessary to keep the core experience intact. There are some great indie titles like Patapon but generally speaking PSP game reviews go something like this: "faithful adaptation of the bestselling PS2 title X notwithstanding the sacrifices made in conversion." Whereas DS has always forced innovation by the nature of its hardware.

LBP on PSP is awesome though :D :D

... but my phone does most of that, and more! I want a console for gaming!

PSP not getting Spirit Tracks, so Sony can lick my balls xD
