Why and what would someone choose between the following?

Q6600
Q6700
Q9300

Or what about an E8500

I'm looking at getting a Quad and want a sound understanding first.

Also, which Gigabyte board would be best for a budget system.

Maybe a bit, nothing mad like chucking it the deep freeze and spanking it hard.

I'll be taking sometime on the build, maybe 3 months so I can get decent parts but not lay out 6000 in one shot.

in terms of pure numbers, the E8500 is a beast when overclocked on air. However I am sucker for more cores especially as I believe more apps will start to move towards using more than two cores.

Yeah, I agree with the more cores thing.

So Q6600 would be good enough? Can get new for just over R2000 direct from rectron so not too bad.

Was looking at the ASUS Maximus Extreme - Republic of Gamers as a mobo. Very nice but way too expensive.

yea q6600 FTW

heard bad things about the maximus, some ppl cannot overclock to well on it and others can

seems a waste to buy such an expensive board though

I would just get the cheapest P35 based board, which as far as I know is the Asup P5K at PCint for about R1200.

go for the Q6600... I mean, it's the most supported cpu ( the new Q9xxx's might not work on your mobo). also it's been tested and it just works. As for applications, I reckon that over time more app's will support more multi core systems

R1810 at Sahara.

Do you really think Quad core is a better option than a Dual core?

I read that someone high up at Nvidia would prefer it if CPU companies increased Mhz and didnt go overboard with multi cpu's... Im planning on getting a new pc and I think Ill just get a Dual Core?

OR would that be a mistake?

You will NOT be making a mistake at all. E8400 is dreamy.

I've decided to go with Q9300 mainly for the new instructions, higher FSB and I don't plan to overclock it(by much anyway).

Most games don't have quad core support as of yet, but will in the future so I think it's a good investment! ;)

I would say have a go for the Q6600, Prices have come down alot!

I was supposed to go for a Q9450 untill I read the reviews on its OC'ability then went for a Q6600 :)
Running at 3.6ghz stable. Or 4Ghz when I feel like :) Ram at 1Ghz
