Quad or Dual?

So you shouldn't buy a Bugatti Veyron because the roads haven't been properly optimized and the speed limit hasn't been increased? Watch me stretch a metaphor to breaking point :p
 
depends in what country you live in, (id say Germany is the best option for that one)

Ok i understand your thinking. My point is just this. The quads are definately not that much worse for gaming than a dual core(if at all),i helps a lot for when your running multiple applications at the same time, you most probably won't have to upgrade as soon as you would with a dual core processor.

If i had to buy a dual core now then i would go for a cheapie and not one of the more expensive E6850 ones eg. as the new penryn chips being released in late jan will drop in price dramatically compared to the current pricing on dual cores(eg3ghz now=266$,New 3Ghz penryn=177$) but the equivalent quads(penryn) will still be priced at exactly the same price as the current quads.

So quad core processors will most likely only drop in prices a bit later,maybe in Q2/Q3 '08.

As for AMD..their new phenom CPU seems to still be slower than the current q6600 ATM. So nothing to get excited about there.
 
unless the quad suffers by loads in terms of gaming when compared to the dual core you are looking at, it makes little sense to go for the dual. I mean let's say that "good" gaming speed with your favoured setting is 35fps and the dual is 55 and quad is 49 (I assume of course we are talking marginal differences), then that is much of a muchness.
 
I currently top out the maximum FPS all of the games that I play :)

I didn't get half the FPS before with my AMD 3800+...

Okay I understand the P.O.V about the quad. If you read my earlier posts, I think it was in this thread, I stated I would definitely not go for the E6850 over the Q6600. @mecurial: the E6850 actually beats the QX6850 at some tests, thats quite impressive considering the price difference.

If you want to run multiple apps, then Quad is what you need. Photoshop and all that stuff. If you want to game and want a cheaper alternative to a quad, the new penryn duos or the cheaper duos at this time will be a good buy. You can go to Toms Hardware and check out the processor charts and compare processors.

Will you join my core2 duo clan, cleverly disguised as a Intel Quad Processor shop. We switch Q6600 with E4400 and sell them to oblivious customers. Zenbaas and Beanie think they got Q6600, but its really just a Pentium D, muahahahahaha.
 
If there is a difference between the Core2Duo and the Core2Quad in games you most probably wouldn't be able to spot it unless you watch FRAPS with a hawk's eye ;)
