Quad or Dual?

Honestly buying a quad core for the same price as a dual, that gives more or less the same results when benchmarking and will give you better performance in the near future when there is better software support for multi-threaded applications, will be the intelligent choice to make!

Or u can buy a e6550 or an el cheapo e2xxx for now and then couple months down the line throw in a Quad core based on the penryn...

amd, pentium d and now core dou/core 2 series.

3 gerenations of dual core and that isn't properly implemented yet - the only real difference is in rendering applications except photoshop csX where the daul bets the qaud hands down.

looking at that one have to wonder how long for it to take and be implemented. its looking like a white elephant on the same shelf as 64bit computing - very little usage actually.

there is the SLI/Crossfire to look at as well, coming already from the voodoo cards its still not a matured implemented concept that yields very good results for money spent.

crysis/u3; the 'next gen' is out those engines still needs maturity themselves and they don't properly go past 2 cores yet.

quad core future proof, when? when it does reach that level your Q6600 will be absolute anyways taking moores law in effect and current cpu trend paths.

best option seems the 3GHZ dual core and when the quad actually is what it should be then get a quady rather than suffer the current drawbacks now - same with sli and tri sli i would say.

lol, but do you want 2.4 or 3GHZ? The 2 cores do perform better than the 4 in gaming, only optimised apps where you see the big difference, but most people won't really care.

I don't know if 4 cores will become useful, for gaming, even in the next 6 months or year.

agreed. not just the speed of the processor in general, but also the bus speed on the E6850 is faster than the Q6600 and that's where the difference in speed comes into play.

hmmm... ya, well U3 is optimized for 2 cores, only, it doesn't use the full potential just yet...

Is it only gaming you after, and not other cpu heavy programs like Photoshop?

I my self use Photoshop quite alot, only problem is that I find that my pc is crap for it.

Good plan. I wouldn't want to get the Q6600, it doesn't have an X or an E, don't like Q that much :)

who the flip plays alan wake. never even heard of that.

My point is Mercurial that games are being developed with quad core technology in mind. Google it and have a look, graphics look awesome. And crysis is also supposed to use quad core tech so the CPU will be better utilized.

but it didn't happen. my point get a dual core now and get a quad when its worth it to get - getting a quad now would be waste of money since when its actually implemented your little 2.4 quad will be old and outdated and then rather get the pyrren++ or whatever

photoshop is faster on a dualcore than a quadcore btw - go look it up.

as to what i am going to use it for: games, art rage, corel painter, and photoshop.

exactly. this is what i was trying to say.

Get an E6550, or 4300 or w/e, save the money now, don't go Quad yet. There are much better quad processors coming out. Don't get the E6850, its a waste, if you have to chose between E6850 and Q6600 get the quad. Otherwise wait :).

crysis uses four cores and the developers are quoted as saything that it will run best on a quady

Thats what i thought. I know it wasn't optimized for the demo but the full release is another story.

I did

Linky1

Fastest four times on their Photoshop test all belong to the quad core CPUs

Linky2

Fastest three times on their Photoshop test all belong to the quad core CPUs again...

Owned! LOL :D

How exactly are they much better f4ntom? What do you understand as being better with the new quads or are you just saying its better because its new? I know why they will be an improvement for some...but i am interested to hear your take on it.

Sorry Zenbaas excuse my hyperbola. I am just saying that in the future the prices of quads will drop dramatically. When qauds are properly utilized you will be able to compare all the various quads against each other. Maybe Intel hits a perfect formula, or AMD makes something brilliant :D. You never know how the Quads could be optimized in the future. The Core2 has been proven but the Quad still needs to iron out the kinks. You can't expect Intel to release a perfect Quad? Who knows what they could fix, and squeeze another bit of power out of those four cores.

I'm not attacking the Quad or the people who bought it. I just think that getting a cheaper dual core now, and then a years time when Quad technology is being properly utilized getting a better optimized and tried tested processor.
