mostly seems that the

Intel® Boxed Core2™Duo E6850 Processor - 3.00GHz Dual Core is

in overall gaming performance than

Intel® Boxed Core2™Quad Q6600 Processor - 2.40GHz Quad Core
...

question begs now which is better to get for a 1 year cycle - looking at the current multi core support latest next gen engines seems that 2 cores is the better buy, right ?

Wait another month before you buy a cpu. There's going to be a couple of new cpu releases in the next month or so.

However if you can't wait, take the E6850 if you are not going to overclock and the Q6600 if you are

this should point you in the right direction -> http://xtreview.com/review212.htm
you'll notice that there's no real difference in performance, as the E6850 performs almost as well as the quad most of the time and sometimes even better.

remember that most of the games and apps available, are not yet optimised for taking advantage of quad-core cpu's, so buying them would literally be a waste, but if you're thinking ahead as to what the future apps and games might offer, then by all means go for the quad core. but for now, the core 2 is quite fine. i have the E6850.

I bought the Q6600 because I don't plan on buying a new CPU within the next 6 months...

Agreed. Or i will be buying a quad. LOL Thing is i would not buy a E6850 now as the new penryn chips that will be released around end of jan will cost much less for an equivalent 3Ghz CPU(177$). Whereas at least the quads will still be 266$ for quite a while. So you will be able to still sell your "current" quad for a bit more whereas the E6850 will go down in value very quickly once the penryn chips are released. Hope you understand my logic.

And games are more and more starting to be optimized for quads.(Crysis eg.)

dude would you want 2 or 4 cores for around the same money

im sure you'll agree 4 is better than 2

choice made

lol, but do you want 2.4 or 3GHZ? The 2 cores do perform better than the 4 in gaming, only optimised apps where you see the big difference, but most people won't really care.

I don't know if 4 cores will become useful, for gaming, even in the next 6 months or year.

Atm dual is faster but going dual when u can afford quad is dum.The only reason y dual is faster atm is because there isn't any real software support for quad core yet.Go quad and your ready for the future.Go dual and u will end up upgrading next year somewhere again.Thats how i see it.

Get an E6750 for the time being or an E6550 and then when the better Quads go down in price you can get one of those. On the other hand if you do plan to overclock, you should get the Q6600 because when clocked it can before as well as the E6850 and better. (4core, thats computer spleak holy sh*t :D)

AFAIK there have been games developed recently(or are still) which utilizes quad core technology.Eg Alan wake(?) comes to mind where each core is used to render something different etc etc.

Why would the CPU be doing the rendering?

well my quaddie at 3.2ghz ekhaat :)

so i got 4 cores at 3.2ghz

there is not that much difference between 2.4 and 3 anyhow maybe 10%

he'll be kicking himself when games come out that utilize all 4 four cores and he's forced to upgrade again

future proof as opposed to speed :) i would rather run a game with 4 2.4ghz cores than 2 3.0ghz cores

Ok so maybe the wrong wording.(im not the developer so sue me) But google alan wake and quad and look for the you tube video. The developer explains it properly.Almost all the cores are utilized for something.

well... just think about it

4cores @ 2.4ghz = 9.6ghz(if all used) and only 4.8 ghz if the game only uses 2cores
2cores @ 3ghz = 6ghz and then when the games that support 4 cores come out you got 6 ghz

So the dual core will give great now performance, while the quad core will give you less now performance, but it's true potential will be released in future games
