Quadcopter/Drone Thread

HiFi Corp had the Mavic for R17999 last week.

I was so interested in the DJI but found another drone that is larger in form but would serve another purpose that I would need to solve very soon.

Yuneec Q500 4K

Only reason being the detachable camera and hand held gimbal.

The DJI osmo is a R5000 piece of kit, the Q500 includes it

How much and were from?
What is the footage like compared to a Mavic?

The yuneec actually produces better footage according to some of the reviews I have watched.

Some functionality and feature loss in comparison to the DJI and also has a shorter flight time.

You could get the Q500-4K on Takealot a while back for around R18k but it has since been removed.

Big reason to go DJI would be the portability and local support/parts

R18K isn't much cheaper than the Mavic and the Mavic will have better support and resale value.

First impressions of the Mavic is really good, charged everything last night, installed the firmware and looked at various videos on the tube about flight safety, mavic specific features and tips, calibrating, landing etc etc

Safe to say for the first month I will be flying in Beginner mode and it will be a long long time (if ever) before I take it over the water.

Planning a trip up the West Coast this weekend to look at the flowers, so would definitely attempt some footage if I get enough flytime in before then. Need to make sure I can do a few squares/figure eights in the air and land it on spot every time. Also need to get comfortable with the remote control.

So being a responsible adult, I went reading about RPL Licensing and the laws on http://www.caa.co.za/Pages/RPAS/Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems.aspx

First things first, this means every single video of Table Mountain, taken on the beach in front of my house has been done so illegally as NetCare Helipad is less than 10km away. Regardless if you have a RPL or flying as a hobby.

Also every person who flies under Private Use and have adds on their youtube channel is also breaking the law.

But with all these smart features on the Mavic Pro, what are allowed under the law, I am still getting use to all the jargon so keep your crucifictions at bay. For instance.

On the [point to fly] option, the drone is using GPS and not your input to navigate, so does the same laws apply? I have seen videos taken from BigBay that sends the dron all the way to Marine Circle which is definitely out of line of sight, I am also sure if this was a licensed individual, he would have taken the aerodrome into consideration.

If I am using it to record myself doing some sort of tutorial or activity and I am the only person around, does the 50m rule still apply to me? That is rather stupid if it does, since the Mavic is filled with obstacle avoidance and actually capable of [follow me] and [tripod] mode.

It would be a sin if I had to run to the mountains each time I want to start up this rather costly paperweight.

How for can the rules be bend within reason due to these intelligent, autonomous, safety and obstacle aware drones.

Sure the laws were put in place to cover the most basic, home build racing drones.
 
Anyone familiar with bringer over a drone from Hong Kong? Someone I know is going there and is willing to bring me one back - looking at the Mavic Pro specifically. Prices quite a bit better there than here, just not sure on import tax etc?

unbox it ... tell him to bring it here as if its his own, not new :D or else, minimum is 14% vat on declaration....
