Quadcopter/Drone Thread

Just happened across this thread, allow me to stand on a soapbox quickly :) hopefully I can answer some questions

I fly manned aircraft, and as a requirement, need to know the various laws and airspace's etc quite well, I also get very very angry when I see people flying drones close to aircraft, knowing the damage that can occur. FYI an Egyptian goose required Comair's 737-800 ZS-ZWB to have its vertical fin completely replaced by Boeing shortly after it was delivered; after a bird strike leaving OR Tambo, now can you imagine what a drone can do?

Saying that, however

In a nutshell, in SA we have 3 types of airfield airspace

1) CTR - large airports like OR Tambo, Lanseria, Cape Town Intl, Bloemfontein etc use this airspace, it is large, and controlled
2) ATZ - smaller airports like Rand Airport, Grand Central, Port Alfred, Upington etc - its still controlled, but the rules are slightly different
3) Unmanned Airfields - Vereeniging, Parys, Eagles Canyon (Diepsloot), Stellenbosch, Morningstar etc - these make up by far the largest amounts of airfields in SA

The people in charge of defining our airspace are called ATNS, they publish a KMZ file every month or so detailing FAR's (Restricted Airspace) FAP's (Prohibited Airspace) and show the boundaries of all controlled airspace - if in doubt, download it and take a look :)

For NOTAMs etc you can sign up for a free account on File2Fly - its significantly easier than the CAA website - usually just watching the news and keeping far away from high profile events is sufficient

I've attached a briefing from the website just for those who are curious, and the notification regarding the national parks

Now, regarding that 10km rule, it is most definitely unreasonable - just use common sense when flying your drone, don't fly it high, don't fly it right next to an airfield, and if you notice aircraft are flying a specific pattern (a circuit) or a final approach path - don't fly it near the aircraft under these circumstances - if we take the uncontrolled airfields into account, almost everywhere in GP is a no drone zone, hence why I say the 10km rule is absurd.

As already mentioned by others, don't fly in a national park or near a national keypoint, the cops love arresting people with expensive toys. never mind the penalties

(2) A person convicted of an offence in terms of subsection (1) is liable, in the case of a first conviction, to a fine
not exceeding R5 million or imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years and, in the case of a second or
subsequent conviction, to a fine not exceeding R10 million or imprisonment for a period not exceeding ten
years or in both instances to both a fine and such imprisonment
.

As a general rule, don't fly anywhere in controlled airspace, especially CTR's - if you are caught, you will be in HUGE trouble, I almost klapped some hippie flying his drone at Mix Fest last weekend, right next to the extended center-line for Lanseria, and high enough to be a hazard to people in the circuit. It's because of people like that, that these laws are as harsh as they currently are.

If anyone has questions regarding airspaces or FAP's FAR's or whatever, feel free to ask :)

I haven't taken my drone out much since flying it in Santorini, Greece in August. Need to arrange some time for it. :)

Mavic Mini announced today and it looks ok - I'm not trading my Air in but it seems like a step above the Spark.

12mp sensor that produces 2.7k video, wifi not ocusync. But 30 minutes flight time which is nice.

That Mini looks nice. I'd be tempted; but I don't fly the Spark all that much. Hoping to get it in the air again soon. Just need some good locations to go fly in.

Alternatively you can throw it my way and I'll put some mileage on it :P

Got my drone back yesterday from Uganda's drone jail as I was leaving the country. You might be able to smuggle the new Mavic Mini in via your pocket but anything larger is going to share this closet with a lot (maybe 100+) of other drones.

The props are fixed, which is my only major concern... Props are the first thing to break when you crash. I have raised this concern with them, and whether it makes the final design is yet to be seen.
I see they included a small screwdriver with the mini to change props.

I'm flying from South Africa to Armenia with a stop over of 4 days in Qatar in December. Does anybody know if I would be able to travel with a Mavic Mini? If I could leave it in a locker at the airport I would, but it is my understanding that there are no lockers at Hamad International Airport? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey all, just a quick question. I am looking at putting in a pre-order for the new mavic mini, what is a good place to get it from? I see it on a few places but not sure what the best places is to get it from.

I would really love a drone, the new Mavic Mini looks great, but I am not sure what I would do with it and whether I would be bored of it after a few weeks. At the moment one seems like a really expensive toy...

The cheapest usually works best for me :) You could always wait until Black Friday to see if there are any specials.

IMO it's too dumbed down but it could be a lot of fun, for a while.

I'm on a waiting list from Outdoor photo. It seems that the Fly more combos sells fast. A few sites has it as a check out option but I have not received any confirmation from any of them that they currently have stock.

Any indication of how long the waiting list is? Or when stock is expected?

Unfortunately not. I've emailed them three times since last Thursday asking if they have received stock yet, but they have responded each time saying they expect to receive their stock the next day. After the 3rd email I've stop asking.

Spend a little more and get an Air ;)
