Quadcopter/Drone Thread

I've never seen a Mavic but can't you tie a loop around the front of camera (then release by tilting it down)?

Unfortunately that might damage the gimbal.

We’ve had a few trial runs with respectable results. Just waiting for the ice to freeze and set the string in place. Hopefully both takeoff and landing corks stay in place next time.

@bwana that is very creative, how much you reckon you could add before it tips over, or cant take off?

Ive seen this I think is built for small loads to be carried on a drone.
Tipping wouldn't be a problem. The weight is close to the centre until it's time to jettison. As for load capacity... I can say two things with absolute certainty. First that it will fly with (at least) 250g slung below it and second that a 250g fanta bottle will not survive a 30m fall onto a driveway.

Do any insurance companies insure drones for crash damage and flyaways?

My policy only covers theft under all risks.

Ok. They sell those extensions. Are there needed for normal use?
I've not needed the before now. It depends on what you'll be taking off from.

My insurance company would insure the drone for crash damage but not whatever I crashed into.

Cant you get 3rd party as an add on?

3rd party insurance is a legal requirement for fixed wing / helicopters

You can but afaik you need to be a qualified drone pilot and there are only about 70 of those in SA.

To secure the appropriate short term insurance cover, private and commercial drone operators must adhere to the laws applicable to the use and operation of these unmanned aircraft. Godden says that recreational drone operators should take particular note of the fact that insurance under most general personal lines offerings does not cover the aircraft while in use (flying) and would require additional specialised insurance.

Check out dronecovered.com.

If you take a competency course (usually around R2.5k through DRA), you'll usually qualify for lower premiums too.
Sweet.

This worries me: [Not covered for] Any loss, damage or liability whilst the drone is being used in contravention of the SACAA Legislation or Regulations.

Don't regs preclude you from doing anything that would require 3rd party insurance? Like flying over people, roads, or houses?

I haven't been keeping up on current events wrt drone flying during kickdown;

Does anyone know what the current regulations are about flying in SA?

Want to go out to the local park and fly a bit this weekend but don't want to have issues if one grumpy is pissed off because they can't have their ciggies and whisky and decides to report me.
